Elon Musk’s social media site X could face major fines over its alleged failure to police dangerous content – the latest move in an ongoing crackdown by European Union regulators against major tech firms.

The commission had announced last December that they were probing X over the spread of illegal content and misinformation related to the Israel-Hamas war.

The European Commission, the EU’s competition watchdog, is set to hit X with formal charges in the coming days, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Supreme Court handed the Biden administration a major practical victory on Wednesday, rejecting a challenge to its contacts with social media platforms to combat what administration officials said was misinformation.

The court ruled that the states and users who had challenged the contacts had not suffered the sort of direct injury that gave them standing to sue.

The decision, by a 6 to 3 vote, left fundamental legal questions for another day.

Twitch on Friday will terminate all members of its Safety Advisory Council, according to sources familiar with the situation and documents viewed by CNBC.

The council is a resource of nine industry experts, streamers and moderators who consulted on trust and safety issues related to children on Twitch, nudity, banned users and more.

Flaunting a lavish lifestyle to promote materialism can get you thrown off social media in China.

Since April, China has been busy cracking down on influencers who promote ostentatious lifestyles as a means of gaining profit.

China's internet regulator, Cyberspace Administration of China, launched a campaign last month to discourage social media users from "deliberately showcasing a lavish lifestyle built on wealth," the Financial Times reported.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese slammed tech billionaire Elon Musk as a ā€œblokeā€ who has chosen ego ā€œover common senseā€ after Musk accused the country of censorship.

ā€œThis is a bloke who’s chosen ego and showing violence over common sense,ā€ Albanese said in an interview with ā€œFirst Edition.ā€ ā€œI think that Australians will shake their head when they think that this billionaire is prepared to go to court, fighting for the right to sow division and to show violent videos, which are very distressing.ā€

In one camp is a tech billionaire with more than 181 million followers on his own social network. In the other, political leaders representing a country of just 26 million people.

Insults have been hurled for days by both sides in an increasingly bare-knuckled fight between X owner Elon Musk and the Australian government that’s playing out both online and in the Federal Court.

At issue is the right of X to publish a video showing the moment a 16-year-old allegedly stabbed a bishop in an Orthodox Christian Church in Sydney earlier this month.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has spoken out against billionaire and X owner Elon Musk, specifically as he fights a court order from the country.

The order relates to videos shared on X showing Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel getting attacked by a person with a knife, with an Australian judge ruling on Monday that X must block all users from viewing the video. Albanese said in an interview that by fighting the court’s order, Musk is ā€œfighting for the right to sow divisions and to show violent videos which are very distressing.ā€

Brazil has opened an investigation into Elon Musk over a potential obstruction of justice after the X owner said he reactivated accounts on the social media platform Brazil had ordered the platform to block.
