A former employee of artificial intelligence company OpenAI who alleged the company’s programs violated copyright was found dead of an apparent suicide in his San Francisco apartment last month, officials shared Friday.

San Francisco’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the deceased as 26-year-old Suchir Balaji, who spoke out against his company’s practices in an October article in The New York Times. He was found dead two days before Thanksgiving.

A “Trump2024” banner labeled “Promoted by Team Trump” sat atop the What’s Happening summary on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, during the fourth and final night of the Republican National Convention on Thursday.

The world's biggest record labels are suing two artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups over alleged copyright violation in a potentially landmark case.

Firms including Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Records say Suno and Udio have committed copyright infringement on an "almost unimaginable scale".

They claim the pair's software steals music to "spit out" similar work and ask for compensation of $150,000 (£118,200) per work.

Suno and Udio did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Microsoft engineer Shane Jones filed a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Wednesday alleging that its AI design tool Copilot is “not safe.”

Jones told CNBC in an interview that he was able to use Copilot to generate images of teenagers playing with assault rifles. He also said the tool would produce unsolicited violent, sexualized images of women and ones that may violate copyright laws.

Is it a crime to learn something by reading a copyrighted book? What if you later summarize that book to a friend or write a description of it online? Of course, these things are perfectly legal when a person does them. But does that change when it's an artificial intelligence system doing the reading, learning, and summarizing?

If you’re old enough to remember watching the hit kid’s show Animaniacs, you probably remember Napster, too. The peer-to-peer file-sharing site, which made it easy to download music for free in an era before Spotify and Apple Music, took college campuses by storm in the late 1990s. This did not escape the notice of the record companies, and in 2001, a federal court ruled that Napster was liable for copyright infringement. The content producers fought back against the technology platform and won.
