The first deportation flights carrying migrants from the United States to Guantanamo Baywere "underway" on Tuesday, the White House confirmed, as President Donald Trump's new administration looks to crack down on illegal immigration.

The first flight was reportedly carrying nearly a dozen migrants, a security official told the Reuters news agency, the first of over 5,000 people held by US authorities in Texas and California which the Pentagon says it intends to deport.

Trump has ordered the U.S. to withdraw from the U.N.’s World Health Organization, a move health experts say could undermine the global response to the next pandemic. Other executive orders issued by Trump on day one include a rollback of policies around DEI and LGBTQ rights, reflecting the mounting right-wing attack on transgender communities. One order states, ā€œAgencies will cease pretending that men can be women and women can be men when enforcing laws that protect against sex discrimination.ā€ Another order seeks to rename the Gulf of Mexico to ā€œGulf...

In a move that has alarmed national security experts and Republicans alike, outgoing President Joe Biden has removed Cuba from the U.S. State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism, despite the island nation’s well-documented ties to terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. This decision, widely criticized as a dangerous concession, overlooks Cuba's continued support for terrorist groups, which threaten U.S. allies and interests in the Middle East and beyond.

The Pentagon said Monday it had transferred 11 Yemeni men to Oman this week after holding them for more than two decades without charge at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The transfer was the latest and biggest push by the Biden administration in its final weeks to clear Guantanamo of the last remaining detainees there who were never charged with a crime.

The US has repatriated a detainee from its military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to Tunisia, the Pentagon announced Monday, the fourth detainee to be transferred this month.

Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi, 59, was determined to be eligible for transfer after a ā€œrigorous interagency review process,ā€ the US Department of Defense said in a statement, more than 22 years after he was first brought to the facility.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin notified Congress about his intent to repatriate Yazidi to Tunisia in January 2024. He was never charged with a crime.

It wasn’t long ago that Havana’s Plaza of the Revolution was packed with American tourists knocking into each other with selfie sticks while taking photos of the iconic image of the revolutionary Che Guevara and trying to catch a ride in a candy-apple red 1952 Chevrolet Bel-Air.

Today, those polished 1950s-era American convertibles that came to symbolize quintessential Cuba sit empty, the tourists they once carried largely gone.

The USS Helena, a fast-attack nuclear submarine, surfaced in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a day after Russian naval forces arrived in Havana to conduct drills with the island nation, a Russian ally.

In a statement posted on X, US Southern Command said, ā€œThe fast-attack submarine USS Helena is in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as part of a routine port visit as it transits the U.S. Southern Command geographic area of responsibility while conducting its global maritime security and national defense mission.ā€
