The number of illegal immigrants apprehended attempting to enter the United States from Mexico in January dropped off sharply as the second Trump administration implements a crackdown at the southern border, according to new government data released Monday.

Border Patrol agents will no longer wear body cameras during field operations. This decision came after a viral social media post showed how body cameras can identify individual agents.

"All U.S. Border Patrol Agents will cease the use of body-worn cameras (BWC) in all operational environments," Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement to NewsNation, which initially reported the news.

For months, President Donald Trump had promised to ramp up deportations of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. as part of a restrictionist immigration policy.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation on Thursday, Jan. 23, at a business in Newark, New Jersey, sparked criticism from the city’s leaders. It comes as the Trump administration looks to launch some of its first major operations to find and deport undocumented immigrants in the country illegally.

Newark’s Democratic Mayor Ras Baraka, also a candidate running for governor, accused ICE of detaining citizens, as well as a US military veteran, while conducting what he described as a raid.
