The momentum behind the Make America Healthy Again movement is strong. In fact, it’s so strong that RFK Jr. has now claimed that Health and Human Services will announce multiple new studies on the role of environmental toxins in autism within only three weeks. “Within three weeks, and probably, we’re hoping in two weeks, we’re going to announce a series of new studies to identify precisely what the environmental toxins are that are causing it. This has not been done before, and we’re going to do it in a thorough...

Zzz’s the day, but do it naturally! Seniors should aim for seven to nine hours of shuteye a night — unfortunately, research indicates that many struggle to fall and/or stay asleep. Insomnia has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, mental health troubles, cognitive decline and even accidents. A new study reports that seniors with insomnia also face higher odds of disability — and that risk persists even if they take medication to try to sleep more. “We found that as older people used more sleep...

Three summers of extreme drought might have contributed to British rebellion against Roman legions, according to academic research. The drought took place between 364 and 366 AD and may have been a determining factor behind the rebellion, called the Barbarian Conspiracy, which was an attack on Roman rule in Britain. Researchers from the University of Cambridge analysed oak tree-ring records and surviving Roman accounts to argue that the droughts were a driving force in the pivotal events. The findings have been published in the journal Climatic Change. Picts, Scotti and...

New research suggests that vegans may be more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies than their meat-eating counterparts. Worse still, scientists found that even vegans who hit their daily protein goals with plant-based sources often fall short on two essential amino acids, putting their health at risk. In the US, an estimated 1% to 5% of the population follows a vegan diet, which eliminates all animal products, including meat, dairy and eggs. Over the years, researchers have found that following a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of heart disease,...

This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlighted the following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: A new study has investigated how the relationship between mean annual precipitation (MAP) and grassland biomass changes when one or more nutrients are added. The authors show that precipitation and nutrient availability are the key drivers of plant biomass, while the effects of plant diversity are minimal. The work is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

I most sacred week in the Christian calendar. Tens of thousands of Catholics will descend on Vatican City for Easter Sunday Mass on April 20th, which will celebrate Jesus’s resurrection. The pope would usually preside over at least eight ceremonies during Holy Week. This year, still recovering from double pneumonia, Pope Francis is more restricted. But on April 17th he nevertheless managed a visit to a prison in Rome.

While parents are worrying about the amount of screen time their children are spending on devices such as smart phones and tablets, another group of people might benefit from using technology more — older adults. A Dell Medical School study of 57 previously published studies found that of the 411,430 adults ages 50 and older in these studies, those who used technology had a reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment and a lower rate of cognitive decline. The work appeared in the journal Nature Human Behavior. Jared Benge, a co-author...

Last May, as India conducted the largest democratic election in history, I spoke to reporters and fact-checkers in the country about the challenges they faced identifying political deepfakes. Many of them spoke to shortcomings in existing AI detection tools, and the biases baked into them. Most commercial detection tools, and even models developed by academic researchers, are trained on datasets collected in and about the Global North. Audio detection models index heavily on training clips in English and other Western languages.
