Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is among the U.S. delegation making its way to Davos, Switzerland, for the annual World Economic Forum.

The meeting of dozens of heads of state and hundreds of government ministers has the theme "Cooperation in a Fragmented World," stressing working together as reduced economic development affects countries amid the coronavirus pandemic and war in Ukraine.

In early 2020, the world counted 2,095 billionaires. Today—two years, half-a-billion covid cases, and at least 6 million covid deaths later—there are 2,668.

One of the biggest global crises in modern history was a boon for some, creating 573 new billionaires—or one every 30 hours—according to Oxfam’s newest report on inequality, presented today at the World Economic Forum in Davos (pdf).

ā€œThe annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) kicked off on Tuesday in the ski town of Davos… Greta Thunberg and U.S. President Donald Trump dominated as they both attempted to frame arguments around climate change… Trump backed a tree planting initiative and dismissed the ā€˜perennial prophets of doom’ on climate change.ā€™ā€ (Reuters)

The left applauds the focus on climate change and economic inequality, but worries that attendees will not match their words with actions.

The right accuses Davos attendees of hypocrisy and criticizes Thunberg’s policy suggestions.

US President Donald Trump has decried climate "prophets of doom" in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where sustainability is the main theme.

He called for a rejection of "predictions of the apocalypse" and said America would defend its economy.

Mr Trump did not directly name the teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was in the audience.

Later, she excoriated political leaders, saying the world "in case you hadn't noticed, is currently on fire".

Zurich Airport, near the World Economic Forum in Davos, on Monday touted the fact that a business aircraft used a blend of sustainable and conventional fuel.

The fuel, made by Finland’s Neste NESTE, +1.39% , aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%, the airport said.

But it’s barely used — the International Energy Agency says aviation biofuel production of about 15 million liters accounted for less than 0.1% of total aviation fuel consumption in 2018.

President Trump on Friday declared ā€œAmerica is open for businessā€ during a speech in Davos, Switzerland, designed to tout his economic agenda to the world’s business and political elite.
