Three Americans convicted of being part of a failed coup attempt in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been repatriated to the US, the country's presidency said Tuesday.

The three, whose ages range between 23 and 36, had previously been sentenced to death, before their sentences were commuted to life in prison last week.

DR Congo's presidency said the repatriation is "part of a dynamic of strengthening judicial diplomacy and international cooperation in matters of justice and human rights" between Kinshasa and Washington.

In February 2025, claims (archived) circulated on social media and news outlets including Fox News and Newsweek that 70 Christians were beheaded in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

Media reports and posts (archived) on X (archived), Facebook and Instagram (archived) said the bodies of the victims were found in a church in Kasanga after the victims were kidnapped from Mayeba, both villages in North Kivu province in the country's northeast.

The leader of an attempted coup on Sunday in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been killed and some 50 people including three American citizens arrested, a spokesperson for the Central African country’s army told Reuters.

Gunfire rang out around 4am in the capital Kinshasa, a Reuters reporter said. Armed men attacked the presidency in the city centre, according to spokesperson Sylvain Ekenge.
