The Circulator bus system could be eliminated next year, with routes ending service by March 2025, according to D.C. Department of Transportation plans released Thursday. The announcement comes more than a week after Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) unveiled a $21 billion budget proposal that included cuts to major programs, including an end to the Circulator and slashes to even her flagship affordable housing production program. These cuts were made to account for a $4 billion budget shortfall anticipated over the next five years. The Circulator would require an infusion...

Alviti said RIPTA’s lawyers are still finalizing the terms of the separation agreement, and the board will meet on Tuesday to vote to approve or disapprove the agreement. It’s unclear what sort of severance payment Avedisian will receive, though his contract allows for up to six months’ pay in the case of a termination. Scott Avedisian, who is also the former mayor of Warwick, submitted a resignation letter to Governor Dan McKee on Thursday, according to RIPTA Board Chair Peter Alviti. President Joe Biden has fired the longtime U.S. Railroad Retirement Board inspector general on grounds of creating a hostile work environment, the White House confirmed to the Washington Examiner.

Martin Dickman had been in the position since October 1994, when he was confirmed by the Senate under the Clinton administration, but he had been under investigation by the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency since January 2023.

Biden was presented with the findings of that report and subsequently fired Dickman for creating a toxic work environment.

Maryland is receiving an initial funding of $60 million from the federal government as the state works to clear the debris remaining from the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

The state sent a letter of request on Wednesday for Emergency Relief funding for mobilization, operations and debris recovery.

"We are deeply grateful to President Biden, to Secretary Buttigieg, to our federal delegation and all of our federal partners," Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said. "I'm grateful for the way the administration has continued to lean in and support us."

The U.S. government authorized $60 million in relief to Maryland for a bridge that collapsed in Baltimore after being struck by a cargo ship.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is giving funding for emergency work after the Francis Scott Key Bridge was struck by Dali, a 984-foot Singapore-flagged ship that lost power when attempting to leave the Baltimore Harbor.

ā€œThese funds serve as a down payment toward initial costs, and additional Emergency Relief program funding will be made available as work continues,ā€ DOT said in a statement.

The Biden administration approved a request of $60 million Thursday from Democratic Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office to help with the tragic collapse of a Baltimore bridge earlier this week.

Moore announced online his administration requested the initial emergency fund relief following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge early morning Tuesday. The structure could be seen crumbling into the Patapsco River after a container ship, chartered by a Danish shipping company, lost power before hitting the bridge.

President Joe Biden on Friday surveyed the federal cleanup in East Palestine, Ohio, more than a year after an explosive fire following the derailment of a train loaded with hazardous chemicals and saw up close the lingering hostility from victims still angry that he waited so long to visit them.

The White House has said Biden was waiting for the right moment to make the trip. He visited after being invited by the village’s mayor.

President Biden praised the East Palestine, Ohio, community during a visit to the town Friday, saying it was ā€œabsolutely amazingā€ what it rose to following the 2023 train derailment that caused a toxic chemical spill.

The president also condemned what he described as the ā€œcorporate negligenceā€ that led to the derailment, which caused a train operated by Norfolk Southern Railway to spill toxic chemicals including vinyl chloride, a compound used in production of plastics.

The Department of Transportation is investigating possible deceptive practices in airline loyalty programs after federal lawmakers raised concerns about how companies are calculating points and rewards.

A DOT spokesperson said in a statement that the agency is planning ā€œto carefully review complaints regarding loyalty programs and exercise our authority to investigate airlines for unfair and deceptive practices that hurt travelers as warranted.ā€
