As we’ve written, in August 2022 then-President Joe Biden signed the sweeping Inflation Reduction Act into law, which included several measures aimed at reducing prescription drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries. The law required the federal government to negotiate the price of some Medicare drugs, capped monthly insulin copays at $35, capped seniors’ out-of-pocket costs at $2,000 a year for Medicare’s prescription drugs and made vaccines free.

Senate health committee chair Bernie Sanders has taken a step toward subpoenaing the CEOs of Johnson & Johnson and Merck related to an investigation into high drug prices in the United States, he announced Thursday.

The step is highly unusual, as the health committee hasn’t issued a subpoena in more than 40 years.

The Biden administration will allow Florida to import cheaper prescription drugs from Canada, giving the green light to a plan put in motion by the state several years ago.

The Food and Drug Administration made the decision on Florida’s plan Friday, saying that the state’s health department must likewise provide quarterly reports to the agency, including information on cost savings and potential safety and quality issues.

The Food and Drug Administration announced Friday it will allow Florida to import medications from Canada, following decades of attempts by states in the U.S. to purchase drugs in bulk at a cheaper price from the country.

Florida will be allowed to purchase medicines in bulk for the state’s Medicaid program, government clinics and prisons from Canadian wholesalers under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, the FDA said Friday.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved importation of prescription drugs from Canada into the state of Florida.

Citing significant cost benefits for patients, Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration proposed the import model under section 804 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act).

"The FDA is committed to working with states and Indian tribes that seek to develop successful section 804 importation proposals," FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, M.D., said in the statement.

Uninsured Americans pay nearly $98 on average for a vial of Eli Lilly’s generic insulin, even after the company pledged to cut the product’s list price to $25 per vial, according to a report released Thursday by Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Eli Lilly earlier this year vowed to slash the list price of its generic insulin, Lispro, from $82.42 per vial starting on May 1. The Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical company is one of the world’s largest insulin manufacturers.

Drugmaker Merck & Co. Inc. sued the federal government Tuesday, seeking an injunction against parts of last year's reconciliation law that allow the Health and Human Services Department to negotiate for lower prices on drugs.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, argues that the negotiation program is “extortion” and violates the Fifth Amendment by not paying the company “just compensation” for its products.
