A pill developed by GSK was found to be safe and effective in treating gonorrhea in a late-stage clinical trial, according to a study published Monday in The Lancet. If approved, it would become the first new class of antibiotic for the sexually transmitted infection in more than two decades. The pill, called gepotidacin, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in March to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women and girls 12 and up — the most common type of infection in women. The drug is sold...

Scientists have found the first new antibiotic treatment for gonorrhoea since the 1990s amid fears over the rise of ā€œuntreatableā€ strains of the sexually transmitted infection. Gepotidacin, an antibiotic currently used to treat urinary tract infections, can also treat gonorrhoea, experts have found. It comes after researchers warned last month that gonorrhoea could become ā€œimpossible to treatā€ amid a rise in antibiotic-resistant infections.

Scientists believe they have found a new effective antibiotic for gonorrhoea, which could be one of the most promising in decades. Gepotidacin can treat and clear the sexually transmitted infection just as well as existing antibiotics and appears to be able to tackle some emerging drug-resistant 'superbug' strains too, say researchers in The Lancet journal. The work was funded by pharmaceutical company GSK which makes the new tablets. Gonorrhoea is one of the most common STIs in the UK and cases have been rising. In 2023, over 85,000 gonorrhoea diagnoses...

(CNN) — A new type of antibiotic for treatment of urinary tract infections in women could also work against gonorrhea infections, a new study finds. This could put the medication, called gepotidacin, on track to become the first new antibiotic for gonorrhea since the 1990s. ā€œGepotidacin is a novel oral antibacterial treatment with the potential to become an alternative option for the treatment of gonococcal infections, supported by an acceptable safety and tolerability profile,ā€ the researchers wrote in the study published Monday in The Lancet, adding that the drug ā€œcould...

A breakthrough new antibiotic has been discovered to help tackle the rise of super gonorrhoea. Scientists have found the first new antibiotic treatment for gonorrhoea since the 1990s as a worrying number of mutant strains become resistant to other forms of the lifesaving drug. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warned last month that if this antibiotic resistance is not tackled it could make the sexually transmitted infection (STI) "untreatable". It follows wider warnings that antimicrobial resistance could one day see antibiotics stop working and common operations become fatal. A...
