Uganda announced Thursday that a nurse, 32, had died of Ebola in the capital, Kampala, amid a new outbreak of the deadly virus there — the first in two years. The country has activated emergency response procedures, officials said. Uganda registered 164 cases and 55 confirmed deaths from Ebola over four months in late 2022. That outbreak ended early the following year. The patient died after experiencing fever-like symptoms and seeking treatment at several hospitals and from a traditional healer, Diana Atwine, permanent secretary of the Health Ministry, said in...

A nurse in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, has died from the ebola virus, marking the first recorded fatality since the last outbreak was contained at the start of 2023, according to health officials. Newsweek reached out to Uganda's Ministry of Health for comment via email. This incident signals the return of ebola to Uganda, raising concerns about potential future outbreaks and the effectiveness of ongoing health measures. The death also underscores the continuing global threat posed by the virus, despite efforts to control it. Health officials are working to contain...

Thousands of attendees of the Burning Man counterculture music festival are beginning to leave the northern Nevada desert after floods left concertgoers stranded for days.

Officials announced that the virtual lockdown was lifted on Monday afternoon local time after a weekend of rain and mud prevented attendees from leaving the concert venue. Storms rolled in, resulting in impassable roads and over a 5-mile hike to leave the area.

CLAIM: Officials confirmed an Ebola outbreak at the Burning Man festival in Nevada, where a national emergency was declared.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. Federal health officials told The Associated Press they have not received any reports of Ebola cases at the event. A screenshot of a supposed post from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirming such cases was fabricated. And while flooding prompted road closures and left attendees stranded, there is no record of a national emergency being declared.

After the Burning Man festival was hit by freak flooding that left attendees stranded at the Nevada desert campsite, wild conspiracy theories have emerged online claiming that the site was now subject to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance due to a virus outbreak.

Some have claimed that festivalgoers had contracted Ebola—a disease that emerged in central Africa—despite one local nurse who attended the festival denying it was the case.

The most famous scientist in America is facing retirement.

After more than five decades of federal service under seven presidents, Anthony Fauci says he’s leaving by the end of President Joe Biden’s term. In a wide-ranging interview with POLITICO, he spoke of his legacy, the hard truths about the country’s pandemic response and his desire to calm the politicization wracking the country.

Anthony Fauci, President Biden’s chief medical adviser, said on Monday that he plans to retire by the end of Biden’s term in office.

ā€œBy the time we get to the end of the Biden administration term, I feel it would be time for me to step down from this position,ā€ Fauci told the Washington Post Monday.

Politico was first to report on Fauci’s plans.

ā€œWe’re in a pattern now. If somebody says, ā€˜You’ll leave when we don’t have COVID anymore,’ then I will be 105,ā€ Fauci told Politico. ā€œI think we’re going to be living with this.ā€

Dr. Fauci has announced he plans to retire by the end of President Biden’s current term, which ends in January 2025.

The infectious-disease expert, who led the Biden administration’s Covid-response, confirmed the news to CNN Monday. He did not specify a departure date.

ā€œI have said that for a long time,ā€ Fauci told the outlet of his repeated teasings of retirement. ā€œBy the time we get to the end of Biden’s first term, I will very likely [retire].ā€

A top official at the World Health Organization said that a genetic analysis of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Guinea suggests it may have been sparked by a survivor of the devastating West Africa epidemic that ended five years ago.

At a press briefing in Geneva, WHO emergencies chief Dr. Michael Ryan described the results of the genetic sequencing of the virus in Guinea as ā€œquite remarkable.ā€
