Sudan’s war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group has spawned one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

The conflict, which broke out in April last year, has forced around 9 million people to flee their homes and left the country on the brink of famine amid a warning by the United Nations that acts of genocide may be unfolding in the country.

A member of the United States air force who had set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington in an apparent protest against Israel’s war in Gaza has died, the Pentagon says.

The 25-year-old airman, Aaron Bushnell of San Antonio, Texas, died from his injuries, the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC, said on Monday.

US media reports said Bushnell livestreamed himself on the social media platform Twitch wearing fatigues and declaring he would “not be complicit in genocide” before dousing himself in liquid on Sunday.

The protester was identified on Sunday by the independent journalist Talia Jane as Aaron Bushnell, 25, an active-duty service member of the US Air Force, who, from a public LinkedIn profile, appeared to work in the service’s IT department.

Late Sunday night, Jane reported that Bushnell had succumbed to the wounds sustained in the self-immolation.

A US Air Force spokesperson confirmed to The Post that 25-year-old Bushnell died overnight, though she did not officially name him, citing the ongoing notification of next of kin. 

Officials were still contacting family members Monday and will not officially announce his death until 24 hours after that is complete, the Air Force representative said. 

Israel is in a bind. Most defense and political leaders know that leaving Rafah and its terrorist network uncaptured would be viewed by Israel’s enemies as a victory for Hamas and would increase the likelihood that adversaries would challenge Israel in the future, whether from Tehran, Southern Lebanon, Damascus, Ramallah, or Gaza City. 

For many years, every time I travelled to Gaza to visit my family, I passed through the Rafah crossing, the border between the besieged Gaza Strip and Egypt. And every time I took a breath in the border city of Rafah, I was reminded of my sister Taghreed’s words:  “I am inhaling the scent of the history of my land.” Her eyes would glow with pride every time she talked of Rafah, and I share the sentiment.

Ever notice how it is always deemed a humanitarian imperative to let Hamas survive? The diplomatic pressure on Israel to stay out of Rafah, Hamas’s final stronghold, has become enormous. Hezbollah has escalated its attacks, and warnings descend daily from the White House, Europe and the Middle East, plus the United Nations-NGO complex.

Warnings from the White House — and the United Nations' top court — appear to have done little to stop some of Israel's right-wing ministers from touting a vision that the country's own prime minister has dismissed: rebuilding Israeli settlements in Gaza after the war.

The world watched closely as a panel of 17 judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ)—the highest court of the United Nations—heard arguments earlier this month over whether Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, in a case brought forward by South Africa. Today, in a landmark interim order, the court determined that South Africa has legal standing and ordered Israel to “take all measures within its power” to prevent acts of genocide.
