The Biden administration has agreed to a prisoner exchange with Russia and is expected to soon secure the release of three American citizens imprisoned in Russia including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, Marine veteran Paul Whelan, and Russian-American radio journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, a senior administration official confirms. Others are believed to be part of the deal.

The exchange has not occurred yet but is expected later today.

After nearly 500 days of imprisonment on dubious spying charges in Russia, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich is being freed as part of a massive swap of political prisoners and journalists involving the United States and Germany, Fox News can report.

U.S. veteran Paul Whelan is also being freed after years in Russian captivity, Fox News confirms.

A court in Russia on Friday sentenced Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, to 16 years in a high-security penal colony, the court said, ending his espionage case but possibly opening a way for a prisoner swap between the United States and Russia.

The harsh sentence represented the first espionage conviction of a Western reporter in modern Russia. But the expedited nature of the case suggested that Moscow might be ready to trade Mr. Gershkovich.

A Russian court has handed down its sentence for Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich after over a year of proceedings.

The 32-year-old journalist appeared in the court in a glass defendants’ cage, his head shaved and wearing a black-and-blue plaid shirt. A yellow padlock latched the cage.

For nearly fifteen months, Evan Gershkovich has been locked away in a Moscow jail.

Today the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reporter went on trial a thousand miles from the Russian capital in Yekaterinburg: the city where he was arrested on espionage charges while on a reporting trip for the Wall Street Journal.
