McDonald’s new $5 Meal Deal debuts Tuesday. For the next month, customers can get a McChicken or a McBurger, four chicken nuggets, a side of fries and a small drink for less than the price of a single Big Mac. The highly publicized, limited-time promotion seems to mark a change in the battle over inflation â€” and it’s a sign that, finally, people — and the government — are successfully fighting back against rising prices.

Two employees of the U.S. Agriculture Department were assaulted and temporarily held by assailants in the Mexican state of Michoacan, prompting the U.S. government to suspend inspections of avocado and mango shipments, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico said Tuesday.

Ambassador Ken Salazar said in a statement that the assault occurred while the employees were inspecting avocados in Michoacan. He said they were no longer being held.

U.S. officials had confirmed the pause in inspections Monday citing security concerns.

BEIJING, June 17 (Reuters) - China has opened an anti-dumping investigation into imported pork and its by-products from the European Union, a step that appears mainly aimed at Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark, in response to curbs on its electric vehicle exports.

The investigation announced by China's commerce ministry on Monday will focus on pork intended for human consumption, such as fresh, cold and frozen whole cuts, as well as pig intestines, bladders and stomachs. The probe will begin on June 17.

McDonald's has informed franchisees that it is ending an artificial intelligence drive-thru order taking program, a report says.

In a message obtained by Restaurant Business magazine, McDonald’s USA Chief Restaurant Officer Mason Smoot said "after a thoughtful review, McDonald's has decided to end our current partnership with IBM on AOT [automated order taking] and the technology will be shut off in all restaurants currently testing it no later than July 26, 2024."

Look, I understand that the hot dog eating contest is a joke. The Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest represents the epitome of American hucksterist gluttony, a nation of plenty making its decadent abundance repulsively real with a row of human beings smashing as much processed beef refuse into their mouths as quickly as our species’ biological limitations will allow them to. I can certainly attest that it never fails to disgust whatever friend or family member I harangue into watching it with me every July 4.

While the demand for weight loss drugs continues to surge, one Wall Street firm is betting that Americans' love for doughnuts is too strong to give them up.

Truist Securities on Monday upgraded Krispy Kreme to buy from hold, with analysts led by Bill Chappell saying that the negative impact of the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) drugs has already been reflected in the stock's current valuation.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has a line about the state of small-scale agriculture in America these days.

It’s drawn from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, which shows that as the average size of farms has risen, the nation had lost 544,000 of them since 1981.

“That’s every farm today that exists in North Dakota and South Dakota, added to those in Wisconsin and Minnesota, added to those in Nebraska and Colorado, added to those in Oklahoma and Missouri,” Mr. Vilsack told a conference in Washington this spring. “Are we as a country OK with it?”
