LONDON, Dec 21 (Reuters) - The Russian embassy in London on Saturday described Britain's planned transfer to Ukraine of more than 2 billion pounds ($2.5 billion) backed by frozen Russian assets as a "fraudulent scheme". Britain said in October it would lend Ukraine 2.26 billion pounds as part of a much larger loan from the Group of Seven nations backed by frozen Russian central bank assets to help buy weapons and rebuild damaged infrastructure. The loans were agreed in July by leaders of the G7 - Britain, Canada, France, Germany,...

ROME, Dec 12 (Reuters) - Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) major democracies "stand ready to support a transition process that leads to credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian governance" in Syria, a statement said on Thursday. The G7 said a political transition after the end of Bashar al-Assad's 24-year authoritarian rule had to ensure "respect for the rule of law, universal human rights, including women's rights, the protection of all Syrians, including religious and ethnic minorities, transparency and accountability". "The G7 will work with and fully support a future Syrian...

Secretary of State Tony Blinken told his counterparts from the G7 countries on Sunday that an attack by Iran and Hezbollah against Israel could start as early as Monday, three sources briefed on the call tell Axios.

Why it matters: Blinken convened the conference call to coordinate with close U.S. allies and try to generate last-minute diplomatic pressure on Iran and Hezbollah to minimize their retaliation as much as possible. He stressed that limiting the impact of their strikes is the best chance to prevent all-out war.

Saudi Arabia privately hinted earlier this year it might sell some European debt holdings if the Group of Seven decided to seize almost $300 billion of Russia’s frozen assets, people familiar with the matter said.

The kingdom’s finance ministry told some G-7 counterparts of its opposition to the idea, which was meant to support Ukraine, with one person describing it as a veiled threat. The Saudis specifically mentioned debt issued by the French treasury, two of the people said.

The Institute for Public Policy Research has called on the government to ensure that UK businesses are a secure, sensible, and stable place to invest. Britain has the lowest rates of investment, including both businesses and government, of any G7 nation, a think tank has reported. The analysis by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has said that without new investment, it’s hard to see how UK economic performance can improve. The report comes amid a sluggish recovery by the UK economy from a technical recession it entered at...
