Just days after a deadly wildfire was brought under control by Greek authorities, torrential rains struck Monday, killing at least one and placing hellish pressure on an already-exhausted nation. At least one man has died in Greece after a wall collapsed due to torrential rains and flooding, local officials told Reuters on Tuesday. The man was a cattle breeder, and was attempting to reach his animals when the sudden, unexpected weather event struck the city of Volos. “It’s the most extreme weather in terms of the amount of rainfall within...

Greece will help train Ukrainian F-16 warplane pilots and assist the reconstruction of Odesa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Monday.

"Today we have an important result for the air coalition: Greece will take part in training our pilots on F-16s. Thank you for this offer," Zelensky told media alongside Mitsotakis on an official visit to Athens.

Kyiv on Friday welcomed a US decision to let Denmark and the Netherlands hand F-16 fighter jets over to Ukraine once its pilots are trained to use them.

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — A multinational force is helping Cyprus fight stubborn wildfires in the summer heat, with Lebanon joining Greece and Jordan in sending aircraft to fight a blaze that has scorched miles of mountainous terrain, officials said Monday. Cyprus Foreign Ministry spokesman Theodoros Gotsis told The Associated Press that neighboring Lebanon is expected to send a pair of choppers as the wildfire continues to reignite on several fronts. Two Greek Canadair aircraft have been dispatched to help douse the fire in the mountains about 11 miles (17 kilometers)...

Greece battled to contain wildfires on the island of Rhodes for a seventh day on Tuesday, as hundreds of tourists who had been forced to evacuate in previous days were expected to fly back to their countries. Some 20,000 people had to leave homes and hotels in Rhodes over the weekend as the inferno that began a week ago spread and reached coastal resorts on the verdant island’s southeast, after charring swathes of land and damaging buildings. More than 2,000 holidaymakers returned home by plane on Monday, and more repatriation...

Tens of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes and abandon holidays on Greek islands including Rhodes and Corfu as fires spread across the region. In Rhodes a black scar has been scorched across the middle of the island to the southern town of Kiotari. Some 16,000 people have been transported across land and another 3,000 evacuated by sea, police say. Others have had to leave by road or use their own transport. They include thousands of tourists who had to make for temporary shelters like sports...

NAMMOS, the legendary Mykonos beach club is taking over the world of hospitality. Last year NAMMOS Dubai overtook giants such as Nobu in Malibu and Cipriani’s in Manhattan to become the world’s highest-earning restaurant. “When I was signing the agreement for NAMMOS Dubai with the authorities there the terms included that turnover be $40 million. I didn’t hesitate, but some of my lawyers were urging caution. I was convinced we would easily hit that target. Now we’re on pace for $71 million in turnover,” says Petros Stathis, the man at...

Relentless wildfires in Greece are forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate from the islands of Rhodes and Corfu — and leaving many tourists stranded at airports and makeshift shelters. The country is one of many in Europe that's been battling a heat wave since mid-July, with temperatures on some islands climbing above 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Scores of wildfires have broken out across Greece in the past week, stoked by dry conditions and possibly arson, as some Corfu officials have claimed. Greek firefighters are still working to contain the...
