FOR DECADES, America resettled more refugees than the rest of the world put together. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in 2016 the United States resettled 96,900 people fleeing persecution, war or other violence; other countries admitted 92,400. But under President Donald Trump, America has become far less welcoming. Last year it took in only 22,900 refugees, 5,200 fewer than neighbouring Canada, which has a population only one-tenth as big.

Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee will try again to pass his S.386 bill, which grants green cards to India’s college graduates if they take jobs from American graduates.
“I believe it’s ready for prime time,” Mike Lee said in a June 19 statement on the Senate floor, adding:

It is ready to become law … I intend to be back next week making yet another attempt to pass this bill into law. And I hope and expect that we will be able to do so.

Leon Fresco, a Democrat lawyer working with Lee to pass the bill, also declared the bill will pass the Senate.

On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security published a final rule expanding the types of public assistance that make immigrants “public charges” and thus ineligible for green cards. DHS

The rule applies to the following programs: Any federal, state, local, or tribal cash assistance, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or formerly called “Food Stamps”), Section 8 Housing/Rental Assistance, Public Housing, Federally funded Medicaid (with certain exclusions).

The Department of Homeland Security released a new regulation on Monday that would severely limit the number of impoverished migrants eligible to enter and remain in the U.S. legally by requiring that visa applicants not be reliant on public services.

Acting U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli on Monday defended a controversial Trump administration rule that would link an immigrant's ability to secure green cards to their use of certain public programs.

Cuccinelli told reporters at the White House that the "public charge" change promotes “the ideals of self-sufficiency and personal responsibility.”

The Department of Homeland Security officially published a change to what’s known as the “public charge” rule on Monday that would make it much harder to apply for a green card or earn a visa. The new policy, which is set to go into effect in mid-October, expands the definition of what would make an applicant likely to become a “public charge,” someone who the government has deemed would be dependent on it, thus rendering them ineligible for legal permanent residency status.

The Donald Trump administration issued a new rule Monday that would enable federal officials to deny green cards to migrants if officials believe the recipients will receive public benefits like food stamps, Medicaid, or housing vouchers.

“To protect benefits for American citizens, immigrants must be financially self-sufficient," President Donald Trump said in a statement from the White House.
