An unaccompanied migrant girl from Guatemala with a pre-existing medical condition died in U.S. custody earlier this week after crossing the southern border in May, according to information provided to Congress and obtained by CBS News.

The 15-year-old migrant was hospitalized throughout her time in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which cares for unaccompanied children who lack a legal immigration status.

Guatemala could see a vote recount before the second round of its presidential election in August, where former first lady Sandra Torres is expected to face center-left Bernardo Arevalo.

The first round of the vote last weekend presented a highly fractured political landscape in the Central American state, with centrist Torres securing only 15.8% of the ballots to place first.

A 13-year-old Guatemalan was on his way to reunite with his father in the United States. A pair of 16-year-old cousins from Mexico were looking forward to steady work. Two young Hondurans promised their mother the journey would set them up to build her a home one day.

Instead, these youths – along with dozens of adults – perished in an abandoned, sweltering tractor-trailer in San Antonio last week, dubbed the deadliest human-smuggling incident in modern U.S. history.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said on Monday she had “robust” talks with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei on the need to fight corruption to help deter undocumented immigration from Central America to the United States.

At a news conference with Giammattei, Harris said a U.S. task force would work with local prosecutors to punish corrupt actors in the region.

Vice President Kamala Harris discouraged would-be migrants from making the trek to the United States during her trip to Guatemala on Monday. It's her first trip abroad as vice president, and she's tasked with leading U.S. diplomatic efforts in the region to stem the flow of migrants to the southern border. 

During a joint press conference with Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei, Vice President Kamala Harris had message for Central Americans considering illegally migrating to the United States: “Do not come.”

“We will discourage illegal migration,” she commented. “The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our border.” 

“There are legal methods by which migration can and should occur,” Harris added.
