Law enforcement officers arrested a former rideshare driver Tuesday on federal hate crime charges for assaulting a passenger he believed to be Jewish or Israeli, according to U.S. prosecutors in San Francisco. The driver, identified by authorities as 38-year-old Daly City resident Csaba John CsukƔs, is accused of punching the passenger in the face in October, prosecutors said. CsukƔs was supposed to pick up the passenger at the San Francisco International Airport and take them home, but upon arriving at the pickup location, authorities said, CsukƔs asked the rider if...

To protect children from sexual exploitation, Canada must pass the Online Harms Act, says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government. ā€œI am the parent of two young boys,ā€ said Justice Minister Arif Virani. ā€œI will do whatever I can to ensure their digital world is as safe as the neighborhood we live in. Children are vulnerable online. They need to be protected from online sexual exploitation, hate, and cyberbullying.ā€

Monday marked the five-year anniversary of the Jussie Smollett hate crime hoax. I say that with some hesitation, because I know that there’s not a single living person who ever wants to hear the name Jussie Smollett ever again. Every detail of that story has been covered, and every joke you can possibly make about it has already been made.

The Justice Department has indicated in a court filing Friday that it is intending to seek the death penalty for Buffalo supermarket shooter Payton Gendron.

Gendron, 20, is already serving a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole after he pleaded guilty to state charges of murder and hate-motivated domestic terrorism in the May 2022 attack that left 10 Black people dead at a Tops grocery store.

Payton Gendron, the white supremacist who killed 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket, may be facing his own death after federal prosecutors announced Friday they intend to seek capital punishment.

It marks the first time the Justice Department under President Joe Biden has authorized a new attempt at the death penalty. While the state of New York does not have capital punishment, the department received an opportunity to seek the penalty in a separate federal hate crimes case against Gendron.

The US federal government is seeking the death penalty for a white gunman who killed 10 people in a racially-motivated 2022 shooting.

The US Department of Justice, in a Biden administration first, said capital punishment is warranted due to the shooting's effect on victims.

Payton Gendron, 20, was sentenced to life in prison last year for the Buffalo, New York, shooting.

Gendron has said he killed people that day "because they were black".

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr condemned a deadly bombing on Sunday, blaming ā€œforeign terrorists,ā€ as police and the military strengthened security in the country’s south and around the capital Manila.

At least four people were killed and at least 50 injured after a bomb exploded during a morning Catholic Mass in a university gymnasium in Marawi, a city in the south of the country besieged by Islamist militants for five months in 2017.

The man accused of shooting three college students of Palestinian descent in a possible hate crime was arraigned in Vermont on Monday morning and pleaded not guilty.

Jason J. Eaton was charged with three counts of 2nd degree attempted murder.

Eaton is being held without bail in connection with Saturday's shootings of Kinnan Abdalhamid, Tahseen Ahmed and Hisham Awartani in Burlington.

Jason J. Eaton, 48, lived in an apartment building at the shooting scene.

A 48-year-old man pleaded not guilty to attempted murder in the shooting of three Palestinian college students in Burlington, Vermont, on Saturday night — as the alleged gunman’s mother revealed he had previously struggled with depression.

Jason Eaton, 48, was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after he was identified as a suspect. He pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempted murder in the second degree on Monday and is being held without bail.

Investigators are ā€œworking hardā€ to determine the motive behind a shooting that left three Palestinian college students wounded in Vermont, Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad said Monday.

ā€œWe still do not know as much as we want to know,ā€ Murad said at a press conference two days after the shooting. ā€œBut I would urge the public and you in the media to avoid making conclusions based on statements from people who know even less than we currently do. We are working hard to find out this information.ā€
