Letters: What slashing Medicaid would do to health care in Cook County

Medicaid is a crucial public health program in the United States, providing essential health care services to millions of low-income families, children, pregnant women, elderly adults and individuals with disabilities. As Cook County commissioner, I know the importance of prioritizing health care access, recognizing its pivotal role in public health. Cook County Health, a trailblazer in health care regardless of financial ability, has served our community for over 180 years, and a substantial portion of our patient population relies on Medicaid.

She is also part of a Facebook group for families with neurodivergent children in her area, which has over 2,400 members. Within both the Facebook group and the center, she said, people are “scared to death.” Some are choosing to halt the process to get diagnosed with autism, she said, while others have left the country. Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. New prostate cancer test pinpoints disease better than PSA option, study finds

A new means of prostate cancer screening could emerge as an alternative to the PSA test, which has long been the first-line option. Using machine learning, a form of artificial intelligence, Swedish researchers analyzed urine samples from more than 2,000 men with prostate cancer, along with a control group. They determined that the simple, non-invasive urine test was able to detect biomarkers of prostate cancer with a high degree of accuracy — and could also determine the grade (stage) of the disease. The results were published in the journal Cancer...

From a ‘gold rush’ to red ink: Why investment in the Massachusetts cannabis industry has cratered

But that money went quickly as their aspirations ran into a hard reality. The couple lost $85,000 to a construction dispute, switched the site of the store to Holyoke from Northampton, and spent their last dollars on costly insurance. Their experience was typical for new cannabis businesses in Massachusetts: lengthy, exhausting, and expensive. When Marco and Amanda Aranzullo launched the Euphorium Dispensary, they had little more than “our savings and a vision.” Though the dispensary only opened in July, the Aranzullos already need money to keep operating and pay the...
