Former President Trump said on Saturday that he “took a bullet for democracy” after he was shot in the ear during an assassination attempt against his life last week.

“
They’re seriously extreme, but I don’t know anything about it,” Trump said during a rally in Grand Rapids, Mich., while speaking about Project 2025.

Former President Trump, speaking at his first rally since surviving an attempted assassination, said that "he took a bullet for democracy" last weekend, while also taking numerous jabs at President Biden.

Why it matters: Trump, who called for national unity in the immediate aftermath of the assassination attempt, repeated many of the common refrains during his rally in Michigan that have become staples in his campaign speeches.

A set of conservative policy proposals known as Project 2025 has become a lightning rod for opponents of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as they seek to highlight what they say are the dangers of him retaking the White House.

Trump has recently tried to distance himself from Project 2025, even though many of his closest policy advisers are deeply involved. The campaign of Democratic President Joe Biden says the project is proof that Trump would adopt a series of authoritarian and hard-right policies if elected.

WHAT IS PROJECT 2025?

As Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts said Monday, the Left’s inflammatory attacks on Project 2025 show that it’s “right over the target.” President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign is so desperate to defeat Project 2025 that it spreads direct falsehoods about it, perhaps not expecting the American people to actually examine what the project comprises.

The Biden campaign launched a special website dedicated to attacking Project 2025, and posted totally baseless claims about the initiative.

At a US House hearing in May, a bespectacled 65-year-old attorney made a startling claim: American citizens’ right to vote was under attack. Non-citizens, Hans von Spakovsky claimed, were voting unchecked in federal elections, and something needed to be done about it.

“We know that aliens are registering and actually voting,” said von Spakovsky, “and it’s important to understand that every vote by an alien voids the vote of a citizen.”

A post shared on X claims Project 2025 called for women to carry “period passports” that track their menstrual cycle.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence that Project 2025 is calling for “period passports.”

Fact Check:

President Joe Biden has increased his attacks on Project 2025, which is headed by the Heritage Foundation, while former President Donald Trump has distanced himself from it, according to The Associated Press.
