The United States has transferred to Ukraine thousands of infantry weapons and more than 500,000 rounds of ammunition that were seized more than a year ago as they were being shipped by Iran to Houthi forces in Yemen.

The US military said the transfer was made on April 4, the latest military assistance that US President Joe Biden’s administration has provided to Kyiv following Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The U.S. government is transferring seized firearms and ammunition to Ukraine as purchases of new firearms and supplies are hindered by House Republicans’ continued opposition to funding requests for that country.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) posted to X, “On Apr. 4, 2024, the U.S. government transferred over 5,000 AK-47s, machine guns, sniper rifles, RPG-7s and over 500,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition to the Ukrainian armed forces. This constitutes enough materiel to equip one UKR BDE with small arms rifles.”

The United States has delivered over 5,000 firearms and hundreds of thousands of rounds to Ukraine's military after obtaining the weapons from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to U.S. Central Command, over 5,000 AK-47s, machine guns, sniper rifles and RPG-7s were sent to the Ukrainian armed forces last week, alongside 500,000 rounds of ammunition. The equipment is enough to arm one Ukrainian brigade, read a post to X, formerly Twitter from Central Command, who added that the "weapons will help Ukraine defend against Russia's invasion."

American forces on Saturday shot down more than two dozen drones launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen in one of the largest recent attacks by the Iran-backed group, Pentagon officials said.

U.S. Central Command said the Houthi drones were an “imminent threat” to commercial ships sailing through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
