Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is pushing back on criticism from Republicans claiming she mocked Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) wheelchair use while giving a speech over the weekend. 

While speaking at the Human Rights Campaign LA dinner on Saturday, Crockett referred to Greg Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels” who is a “hot a— mess.”

She did so in public remarks she gave at an event for the left-wing Human Rights Campaign. 

“We in these hot a** Texas streets, honey,” she said at an event for the left-wing Human Rights Campaign. “Y’all know we got governor hot wheels down there, c’mon now! And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a** mess, honey!”

“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition – I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable,” Crockett dubiously wrote Tuesday on social media.

Media outlets began circulating news this week that the United States had been added to a “global human rights watchlist” due to President Donald Trump’s policies. What the outlets failed to report, however, is that the group responsible for publishing the watchlist takes millions of dollars from many of Trump’s political adversaries, including George Soros’s philanthropic network.

A United Nations judge was convicted on Thursday of trafficking a young woman to the United Kingdom and forcing her to work as a slave.

Ugandan judge Lydia Mugambe, 49, "exploited and abused" the victim, prosecutors said, forcing her to work as an unpaid maid and caregiver while barring her from seeking other employment. A jury found Mugambe guilty of multiple offenses, including facilitating illegal immigration, forced labor, and witness intimidation, the Independent reported.

The U.S. was added to a watchlist of countries with “faltering civic freedoms” after a global watchdog group raised alarm bells over recent actions taken by President Donald Trump and his administration.

CIVICUS, a nonprofit organization that serves as an advocate for democracy, added the U.S. to the list on Monday. It’s the first watchlist of the year.

Iran executed as many as 975 people last year in a “horrifying escalation” of the use of the death penalty, human rights groups claimed on Thursday.

A report released by Norway-based Iran Human Rights and France-based Together Against the Death Penalty said the number of executions was 17 per cent more than in 2023 and the highest in over a decade. Thailand’s senate has passed the final reading of a historic marriage equality bill, paving the way for the country to become the first in south-east Asia to recognise same-sex marriage.

The bill gained the support of nearly all upper-house lawmakers and will be sent to the palace for endorsement by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The law will come into force 120 days after it is published in the royal gazette.
