SAO PAULO (AP) — Heavy rains in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul killed 37 people, with another 74 still missing, the state civil defense agency said Friday, as devastated cities and forced thousands to leave their homes. It was the fourth such environmental disaster in a year, following floods in July, September and November 2023 that killed 75 people in total. The flooding statewide has surpassed that seen during a historic 1941 deluge, according to the Brazilian Geological Service. In some cities, water levels were at...

At least a dozen people are dead in northern Haiti, where heavy rains have triggered deadly landslides and washed out thousands of homes. Most of the deaths occurred in Cap-Haïtien, where heavy downpours on Thursday destroyed a home in the southern part of the city, Barrière Bouteille. The house then took out two other homes below it. “Initial assessments show 2,225 houses flooded and 15 houses damaged,” Haiti’s Civil Protection office said in its latest situation report. The agency said heavy and moderate rains over the last four weeks have...

Coastal hurricanes in the U.S. will become "more destructive" due to climate change, according to a new study. A new study led by researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington found that hurricanes worldwide have been becoming more severe at a "quickening pace" since 1979. To reach these findings, the authors looked at global hurricane data between 1979 and 2000. They discovered that these storms intensified at an average rate of 0.37 knots every six hours from 2000 to 2020, and then intensified by 1.15...

On May 3, Virginia voters can begin in-person early voting for the June primary elections, where two open congressional seats in the northern part of the state have fueled competitive nomination contests while Rep. Bob Good (R) is facing a heated challenge in his Charlottesville-area district. Both Democratic Reps. Jennifer Wexton and Abigail Spanberger have said they do not plan to seek reelection, making their Northern Virginia seats more vulnerable in November contests that are likely to attract large influxes of cash from both major political parties. Statewide, Democrats hope...
