Democrats and the media have been pounding President Donald Trump over the past few days, as Hurricane Florence nears the Carolinas, over his alleged insensitivity to deaths in Puerto Rico last year from Hurricane Maria.

Puerto Rico’s official death toll from Hurricane Maria, the most powerful storm to hit the Caribbean island in almost a century, was raised on Tuesday from 64, a number widely discounted as far too low, to nearly 3,000, based on a study ordered by the governor of the U.S. territory.

President Trump on Wednesday stood the administration’s response to Hurricane Maria last year in Puerto Rico, despite a new study raising the death toll to 2,975.

Almost 3,000 dead and he says, “We did a fantastic job.”

On Tuesday, Harvard researchers published a study estimating that approximately 5,000 deaths can be linked to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The same day, ABC canceled Roseanne Barr’s eponymous show Roseanne after Barr sent a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, an adviser to former President Barack Obama. Cable news covered Barr’s tweet and her show’s cancellation 16 times as much as the deaths of U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico.

Foreign-flagged ships will be allowed to deliver aid to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico after the Department of Homeland Security waived a law blocking non-U.S.-ships from transporting goods between U.S. ports.
