Dollarization, or in the case of some Eastern European countries euroization, is an economic occurrence when foreign currency is used in parallel with the domestic currency. There are various degrees of dollarization/euroization. The reasons for this phenomenon are country-specific, but in most cases, the root cause is the instability of the domestic currency.

Spokane’s Second Harvest Food Bank will host Flavors of India Cooking Class, taught by registered dietitian Carolyn Negley, on May 15. The Kitchen at Second Harvest is part of the nonprofit’s nutritional education efforts, providing information on how to use ingredients to create healthy meals. “There’s a lot of nutritious, affordable food out there that people don’t always know how to cook,” Negley said. “So the kitchen was developed to really help bridge that gap and help people build up confidence in nourishing themselves and their families.” Flavors of India...

(BALTIMORE) — The body of the last missing construction worker killed in the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March has been recovered, officials announced Tuesday as demolition crews prepared to use explosives in the ongoing cleanup effort. Officials said the crew of the Dali will remain on board the grounded container ship while crews conduct a controlled demolition to break down the largest remaining span of the fallen bridge. The steel span landed on the ship’s bow after the Dali lost power and crashed into one of...

People who don’t know its history think the model minority myth assigned to Asian Americans has positive connotations. After all, on the surface, it is tied to success and achievement which are usually considered desirable. But, most of us who sit under this given identity don’t see it as beneficial or liberating. We find it a constricting and confining designation put upon first-generation Asian immigrants decades ago that feels in so many ways harder to wear in the here and now. After waiting patiently for so long, we are finally...

Global funds are piling into India’s $1 trillion sovereign-bond market ahead of the country’s addition to global debt indexes. JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced last year it will add Indian government debt to its benchmark emerging-market index starting in June, a milestone for Asia’s third-largest economy. That gave overseas investors a compelling reason to put money into rupee-denominated Indian government debt, which has been offering some of the highest returns in emerging markets.

More than 4 in 10 adolescents worldwide question whether they’re worthy of love, although they deeply value person-to-person contact and relationships with family and friends, who are still the resources they most rely upon. That’s the finding of the first report from The Relate Project, by the nonprofit, nondenominational Christian organization Young Life, which surveyed more than 7,200 youths and young adults in eight countries to get a sense of what’s happening to Generation Z and the younger Generation Alpha beyond headlines about their social media use and high levels...

Three Indian nationals have been arrested and charged over the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada, which sparked a major diplomatic row between the two countries.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, was shot dead last June by masked gunmen in a busy car park in a Vancouver suburb.

The diplomatic row escalated after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged India's government may have been involved.

Delhi strongly denied the allegation.

The first of India's almost one billion voters cast ballots on Friday in the country's multi-day election, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks a rare third term on the back of issues such as growth, welfare and Hindu nationalism.

The vote pits Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against an alliance of two dozen opposition parties that promise greater affirmative action and more handouts while stressing what they call the need to save democratic institutions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his power at home secured and his Hindu-first vision deeply entrenched, has set his sights in recent years on a role as a global statesman, riding India’s economic and diplomatic rise. In doing so, he has distanced himself from his party’s staple work of polarizing India’s diverse population along religious lines for its own electoral gain.
