Ted Farnsworth pleaded guilty to defrauding investors, admitting to his role in MoviePass' ill-fated $9.95-a-month subscription plan. From August 2017 to March 2019, Farnsworth, who at that time served as chief executive of MoviePass' parent company Helios & Matheson Analytics, made false and misleading representations of the companies' business and operations that artificially inflated Helios' stock, the Justice Department said. Farnsworth's attorney didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. Farnsworth, alongside former MoviePass CEO J.

A former executive of an Essex County pharmaceutical company was accused of participating in a $38 million insider trading scheme, the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of New Jersey announced Monday. An indictment unsealed Monday charges Dale Chappell, 54, a former United States citizen and current resident of Switzerland, with five counts of securities fraud, according to a release from the office.

Japan’s securities watchdog filed a complaint to prosecutors against a former Tokyo Stock Exchange employee and his father for alleged insider trading, the latest in a slew of scandals that have rocked the nation’s financial industry.

The father traded shares of Lawson Inc. and a few other companies using non-public information provided by his son about planned tender offers involving those stocks, according to a release Monday from the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission. The TSE fired the employee Monday.

A federal judge in San Diego has acquitted two businessmen who were charged with securities fraud, ruling prosecutors failed to come up with convincing evidence against the pair, who were among four men charged with allegedly running an illegal pump-and-dump scheme. U.S. District Judge Cynthia Bashant ruled that on at least one of the charges, “the government’s theories are all over the place,” according to a transcript of a Dec. 2 hearing. “It’s not clear to me who was being defrauded,” Bashant said during the hearing, in which she took...

Hedge fund firm Segantii Capital Management and its founder Simon Sadler have pleaded not guilty to insider trading, paving the way for the case to go to trial in Hong Kong.

Former trader Daniel La Rocca also pleaded not guilty at a Hong Kong District Court hearing on Thursday. The trial is set to start on May 4, 2026, and last 25 days.

A UK regulator said a new framework for private company share sales will create “more of a ‘buyer beware’ market” than a traditional stock exchange, with higher risks of insider trading.

The Financial Conduct Authority said it will monitor the potential for market abuse as it develops the Private Intermittent Securities and Capital Exchange System, or Pisces. Only institutions and professional investors will be able to use the new system, and the operators are still to be confirmed.

Trading a national security firm’s securities turned a $320,908 profit for a Boca Raton man. Until, that is, the Securities and Exchange Commission found out the illegal way he made such savvy trades and turned that profit into a $524,065 loss. Legally, in Tuesday’s final judgment in West Palm Beach federal court, Charles Baugh neither admits nor denies he violated federal securities laws’ anti-fraud provisions by insider trading ADT stock using confidential information from a relative. But, money talks and that judgment also says Baugh agreed to pay the U.S....

The company that used to be known as Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. sued Ryan Cohen and his company, RC Ventures LLC, to recover $47 million they made from alleged insider trading in 2022. Cohen founded the pet food company Chewy Inc. and is the chairman and chief executive officer of the Grapevine-based video game company, GameStop Corp. Between January and August 2022, while the defendants “were acting as BBBY’s statutory directors,” they used insider information to trade BBBY stock, according to the complaint filed Thursday in the US District...

A federal grand jury in California has charged short seller Andrew Left with multiple counts of securities fraud for a $16 million stock market manipulation scheme. The Department of Justice said in a statement on Friday that Left, who was a securities analyst, trader, and guest commentator on television channels including CNBC and Fox Business, is charged with one count of engaging in a securities fraud scheme, 17 counts of securities fraud, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. As a short seller, Left would make money...
