Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and his family were forced to flee from the governor’s official residence early Sunday after an arson attack severely damaged the mansion.

The authorities arrested a man who they said had broken into the mansion in Harrisburg, Pa., and thrown objects into the home that started at least two fires and caused significant damage. No one was injured in the attack.

A 38-year-old man was in custody and will face attempted homicide and aggravated arson charges after setting a fire overnight at Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's residence, state authorities said at a press conference at the governor's mansion in Harrisburg on Sunday.

At a press conference Sunday evening, authorities named 38-year-old Cody Balmer as the suspect.

Balmer will be charged with attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson and aggravated assault against an enumerated person, according to officials.

State Rep. Hillary Cassel on Friday became the second House Democrat to switch her party affiliation since the November elections, further adding to Republicans' supermajority.

Cassel, a Dania Beach attorney, said in a post on X that she supports House Republicans' "vision for a better, more prosperous Florida" and questioned whether the Democratic Party adequately supports Israel.

Aformer Cornell University student was sentenced Monday to 21 months in federal prison for threatening to rape Jewish students and behead their babies in a case that became an alarming symbol of rising antisemitic hatred on U.S. college campuses.

Patrick Dai, 22, of Pittsford, N.Y., must also serve three years of supervised release after he finishes his prison term, the Justice Department said.

Officials said that Dai’s threats went beyond the free speech protections of the First Amendment and created a hostile environment for Jewish students. 

District Judge Richard Stearns ruled Tuesday that a lawsuit filed against Harvard accusing the university of antisemitism can proceed, saying “the facts as pled show that Harvard failed its Jewish students.” 

Harvard was sued in January over its campus environment and the handling of protests after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack against Israel, saying Jewish students were harassed and the school did not address the issue adequately.  

Since the founding of the Israeli state in 1948, “Haredi” (or “ultra-Orthodox”) men have been exempted from military service to study Torah instead.

Haredi students and their families would be subsidized by the state. At Israel’s founding, Haredim made up less that 3 percent of the population. The military exemption was for just 400 exceptional students. In light of the devastation of centers of Jewish learning during the Holocaust, this was not an unreasonable proposition.

Israel’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox Jewish men, a decision that threatened to split Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government amid the war in Gaza.

In a unanimous decision, a panel of nine judges held that there was no legal basis for the longstanding military exemption given to ultra-Orthodox religious students. Without a law distinguishing between seminarians and other men of draft age, the court ruled, the country’s mandatory draft laws must similarly apply to the ultra-Orthodox minority.
