Johnson & Johnson’s JNJ -0.33% Covid-19 vaccine could be back in circulation this weekend—albeit with possible restrictions—depending on a recommendation Friday by a federal advisory panel.

J&J vaccine injections were put on hold last week after reports of rare blood-clot conditions in a handful of recipients, including one fatality.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) said on Tuesday it will resume rolling out its COVID-19 vaccine in Europe after the region’s medical regulator said the benefits of the shot outweigh the risk of very rare, potentially lethal blood clots.

When an otherwise healthy 48-year-old Nebraska woman arrived at an emergency room after three days of abdominal pain and malaise, doctors discovered a life-threatening puzzle. Her platelets, the colorless blood cells that clump to form clots, had plummeted. But a CT scan of her abdomen and pelvis revealed extensive blood clots.

Her medical team raced to untangle the seemingly paradoxical combination of symptoms. Even as they treated the patient with a common blood thinner, more clots appeared — in her brain and in the blood vessels around her liver and spleen.

Anthony Fauci, President Biden’s chief medical adviser, on Sunday said he believed the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine would return this week in “some manner or form” after it was paused due to concerns over a possible link to rare blood clots.

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Fauci said he believed administration of the vaccine would "get back on track" by Friday.

Host Dana Bash noted that advisers for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are scheduled to meet on Friday and asked Fauci if a decision would be made during that meeting.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said on Friday that the federal government’s handling of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine was a “huge mistake,” as it caused confidence in the vaccine to plunge.

“We’re not helped in this regard by the behavior of some of these public health people, particularly in the federal government. I mean, how they handled the J&J was a huge mistake,” he said during a press conference.

DeSantis, a Republican, said the move by the Biden administration caused public confidence in vaccines to fall.

Johnson & Johnson privately reached out to Covid-19 vaccine rivals to ask them to join an effort to study the risks of blood clots and speak with one voice about safety, but Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc. declined.

Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine remained in limbo on Wednesday as a U.S. health panel called for more data before making a decision on how and whether to resume use of the one-dose shot, putting off a vote for a week or more.

So far, nearly 200 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the U.S., including 7.2 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. In six cases there have been reports of “a rare and severe type of blood clot” in those who received the J&J vaccine, prompting the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to recommend “a pause in the use” of the J&J vaccine “out of an abundance of caution.”

Federal health officials on Tuesday called for a pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine, saying they are reviewing reports of six U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in people after receiving the vaccine.

All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred six to 13 days after vaccination, according to a statement issued by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
