President Trump addressed Turkey's invasion of Syria in the Oval Office on Wednesday, telling reporters that the Syrian Kurds — who allied with the U.S. in the fight against ISIS — are "not angels," and that the Syrian government and Russia will protect them.

The commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces told a senior US diplomat, "You are leaving us to be slaughtered," demanding to know whether the US is going to do anything to protect Syrian Kurds as Turkey continues its military operation targeting America's Kurdish allies in Syria.

"You have given up on us. You are leaving us to be slaughtered," Gen. Mazloum Kobani Abdi told the Deputy Special Envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, William Roebuck, in a meeting Thursday, according to an internal US government readout that has been obtained exclusively by CNN.

European Union leaders may decide on an arms embargo on Turkey over its incursion into Syria as soon as next week, said four officials familiar with the discussions.

The potential move would send a strong signal to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government and drag Ankara’s relations with its NATO allies to a new low. The officials said the decision could be made over a summit of EU leaders in Brussels on Oct. 17-18.

Ana Navarro and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) clashed in a fiery exchange about Venezuela on "The View," leading the political commentator to warn the senator not to "mansplain" subjects to her.

Paul had also clashed with the hosts of the TV show about President Trump's decision to order the withdrawal of U.S. forces from northern Syria, near the Turkish border.

The clash with Navarro on Venezuela was sparked after the GOP strategist asked Paul if it was fair for Republicans to release ads saying Democrats "will turn the United States into Venezuela."

AKCAKALE, Turkey (AP) — Turkey launched a military operation Wednesday against Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria after U.S. forces pulled back from the area, with a series of airstrikes hitting a town on Syria’s northern border.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the start of the campaign, which followed an abrupt decision Sunday by U.S. President Donald Trump that American troops would step aside to allow for the operation.

Turkey has launched a military offensive against Kurdish fighters in northeast Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday, just days after President Trump announced that he would pull US troops from the area.

ā€œTurkish Armed Forces together with the Syrian National Army against PKK / YPG and Deash terrorist organizations in northern Syria #BarışPınarıHarekatı has started,ā€ Erdogan wrote on Twitter, according to a translation.

ISTANBUL — President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Wednesday that Turkey’s military has launched a long-expected offensive into northeastern Syria targeting U.S.-allied Syrian Kurdish fighters who have played a central role in battling the Islamic State militant group.

ā€œThe Turkish Armed Forces, together with the Syrian National Army, just launched #OperationPeaceSpring against PKK/YPG and Daesh terrorists in northern Syria,ā€ Erdogan wrote Wednesday afternoon on Twitter, referring to the Syrian Kurdish force as well as the Islamic State.
