U.S. employers added 206,000 jobs in June, more than expected and slightly below the revised 218,000 added in May, a sign the labor market remains solid. The unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 4.1% vs. 4%. 

This as both April and May data points were adjusted lower by a combined 111,000, signaling fewer jobs created. This may please the Federal Reserve, which is looking for signs inflation is easing. 

U.S. stocks rose following the report.

Private payroll growth edged lower in June, according to a report Wednesday from ADP that indicates a potential slowdown in the U.S. labor market.

Companies added 150,000 jobs for the month, below the upwardly revised 157,000 in May and the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 160,000. The total was the lowest monthly gain since January.

Without the surge in leisure and hospitality hiring, the total would have been considerably lower. The sector added 63,000 jobs, easily the biggest gain among the categories that payrolls processing firm ADP measures.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday proposed a new rule to address excessive heat in the workplace, warning — as tens of millions of people in the U.S. are under heat advisories — that high temperatures are the country’s leading weather-related killer.

The Biden administration plans to require employers to give workers shaded rest areas and water when temperatures soar, part of a proposed rule that comes as temperature records fall nationwide—as some states have prevented local governments from providing similar protections in recent months.

Under proposed regulations for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, employers in the U.S. will be required to monitor their workers and provide access to shade, water and rest breaks, the White House said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. job openings rose slightly to 8.1 million in May despite the impact of higher interest rates intended to cool the labor market.

Vacancies rose from a revised 7.9 million in April, the first reading below 8 million since February 2021, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. April openings were marked down from an originally reported 8.1 million.

US consumer confidence teetered slightly in June as Americans grew a little warier about the future, new data released Tuesday showed.

The Conference Board’s latest consumer confidence index dipped to 100.4 in June from a downwardly revised level of 101.3 in May. June’s reading landed in line with what economists were expecting.
