Southwest Airlines plans to cut 15 percent of its corporate workforce in a bid to cut costs.

The layoffs - a first in the airline's 53-year history -  will slash around about 1,750 jobs.

The cuts make a shift in strategy following last year's battle with activist hedge fund Elliott Investment Management. To keep Elliot at bay, bosses agreed to cut costs and find new ways to make money, such as charging for seating.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. job openings rose slightly to 8.1 million in May despite the impact of higher interest rates intended to cool the labor market.

Vacancies rose from a revised 7.9 million in April, the first reading below 8 million since February 2021, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. April openings were marked down from an originally reported 8.1 million.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits slipped last week as the U.S. labor market remained resilient.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that jobless claims fell by 5,000 to 238,000 from a 10-month high of 243,000 the week before. The four-week average of claims, which evens out weekly ups and downs, rose by 5,500 to 232,750, highest since September.

Just ahead of its blowout first-quarter earnings report last week, Google laid off at least 200 employees from its “Core” teams, in a reorganization that will include moving some roles to India and Mexico, CNBC has learned.
