A 3.8 magnitude earthquake shook parts of New England on Monday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred around 10:30 a.m. about 8 miles of the coast of York Harbor in Southern Maine, USGS reported.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported. People as far south as Boston reported on social media that they felt some shaking.

A couple closer-than-expected races highlighted Tuesday’s elections in Maine, Nevada, North Dakota and South Carolina, which put Donald Trump’s endorsement power to the test as he heads toward a rematch with President Biden.

But it was an under-the-radar special election in Ohio that turned out to be the biggest shocker of the night. Elsewhere, Trump-endorsed candidates pulled through against their primary challengers, though at least one of them did so with far less breathing room than he may have hoped.

Heat pump installation, benefiting from government subsidies, is fueling clean energy job growth in Maine, according to a state report released Wednesday. The study commissioned by the Governor’s Energy Office shows that Maine’s “clean energy economy” reached 15,000 jobs at the end of 2022, or about 2.3% of the state’s workforce of 656,400. Its increase was greater than the economy generally: Since 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, employment in Maine rose 1%, while clean energy employment increased by nearly 3%. The energy efficiency sector is the largest among five categories,...

A Portland man on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in a St. John Street shooting that still has more questions than answers. Abdirahman Mahmoud, 36, is accused of killing 30-year-old Raoul Tshiyuka, whom police said they found shot early in the morning March 2. Mahmoud’s appearance at Cumberland County Superior Court was brief, just long enough for him to deny responsibility for “intentionally or knowingly” causing Tshiyuka’s death. He is being held without bail. It remains unclear how police identified Mahmoud as a suspect. SWAT teams searched...

[Editor's note: This story originally was published by The Daily Signal.] Wisconsin is one of the most fiercely contested battleground states in this election cycle, but it lacks federal transparency requirements for voter registration imposed on most states, according to a lawsuit by an election watchdog. Minnesota, generally a solidly blue state although it saw a razor-thin margin in the results of the 2016 presidential race, also doesn’t make its voter rolls available to the public, the lawsuit contends.

Prosecutors are seeking a four-year prison sentence and three years of supervised release for Portsmouth High School shooting threat suspect Kyle Hendrickson, while his defense maintains he never intended to carry out a shooting. The 26-year-old from Berwick, Maine is set to be sentenced in federal court in Concord Tuesday, May 14 on two charges handed down by the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of New Hampshire. Hendrickson pleaded guilty to charges of interstate threatening communications and possessing a firearm in a school zone in November. The...

Bissell Brothers Brewing is launching The Garden, an upscale “restaurant within a restaurant” concept at their Thompson’s Point flagship location on Thursday. The new restaurant is located in the 3,500-square-foot space that was formerly home to Rosemont Market and Wine Bar at 38 Resurgam Place in Portland. The Garden spotlights cuisine and wines from northern Italy and the Adriatic Sea region, while Bissell’s adjacent taproom will continue to feature a pub-style menu. “There was interest in the staff to do something different,” owner Peter Bissell explained. “We have one environment...

Powerful tornadoes and storms swept through southwestern Michigan Tuesday evening, destroying or damaging homes and businesses and injuring several residents – and millions more from northeast Texas to the Carolinas face at least a slight risk of severe weather Wednesday. At least a dozen people were injured at a mobile home park in Pavilion Township following a tornado Tuesday, according to a county official. The township is located in Kalamazoo County, where 15 to 20 people had minor injuries and were transported to two area hospitals, according to the county’s...
