PORTLAND, Maine — Of all the high school infielders the Red Sox have taken in the upper rounds of the draft over the last five years, Matthew Lugo is a bit of a forgotten man. Maybe it’s because Lugo is part of a brutal 2019 Red Sox draft class that has produced just two fringe major leaguers (Chris Murphy and Brandon Walter) in five years’ time. Maybe it’s because other infielders, like Nick Yorke, Marcelo Mayer, Mikey Romero, Nazzan Zanetello and Antonio Anderson have gotten more attention, having been drafted...

WELLS, Maine — At Bake Maine, a new breakfast, lunch and pastry shop, there’s a savory sandwich called The Brandon that includes a baked egg, bacon, ham and sausage, all topped with cheddar, American cheese, dijonnaise, arugula, tomato, and avocado, all tucked in between a ciabatta bun. Never heard of The Brandon? There’s a reason for that. It’s unique to Bake Maine, which is owned by Wells natives Kristen and Doug Perry and opened at 2178 Post Road on Friday, May 3. According to Doug, Brandon was just a customer...

A bill to restrict paramilitary training in Maine in response to a neo-Nazi who wanted to create a training center for a “blood tribe” was signed into law by Democratic Gov. Janet Mills on Friday. The law, which the governor signed without public comment, allows the attorney general to file for a court injunction to stop paramilitary training that's intended to sow civil disorder — and to bring charges that carry a penalty of up to a year in jail. Rep. Laurie Osher of Orono introduced the bill after a...

The Senate also voted to study whether the state should allow residents to voluntarily waive their rights to purchase or receive firearms. A bill that would allow civil lawsuits against gun manufacturers who irresponsibly market and sell firearms failed. All of the bills will face additional votes before any progress to the governor’s desk....
