We speak with the Brennan Center’s Faiza Patel, who warns the Trump administration is ramping up efforts to target international students and other visitors and immigrants to the United States over pro-Palestinian speech. The State Department has reportedly launched a new effort using artificial intelligence to help identify and revoke visas for people the government deems to be supporting U.S.-designated terrorist groups, based primarily on the individuals’ social media accounts. “Foreign students are running scared,” says Patel.

More than 30 pro-Palestinian activists filed a civil rights lawsuit against UCLA, alleging the university “repeatedly and systemically” violated the civil rights of protesters during demonstrations at the campus encampment last year. Plaintiffs said they were deprived of “their rights to assemble, speak, learn, and organize freely and safely” and left with “life-altering injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder,” according to a news release about the lawsuit.

The Trump administration appears to be targeting a Georgetown University fellow due to his wife's identity as a Palestinian and her constitutionally protected speech, a lawsuit alleges. On March 17, Badar Khan Suri, a visiting scholar with lawful status, was arrested outside of his apartment building and charged with removability and detained, according to a complaint obtained by ABC News. The Department of Homeland Security alleges Suri was spreading Hamas propaganda and accused him of having ties to the terror group. "This was done pursuant to a policy to retaliate...

US President Donald Trump's administration has detained an Indian man studying at Washington's Georgetown University and is seeking to deport him after deeming him a harm to US foreign policy, the student's lawyer said on Wednesday. The US Department of Homeland Security accused Badar Khan Suri of ties to Hamas and claimed that he had spread Hamas propaganda and antisemitism on social media, according to a statement it shared with Fox News. The statement did not cite evidence for its claims against Suri, who is a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown’s...

The United Nations Secretary-General condemned on Wednesday attacks on UN personnel and added in a statement from his spokesperson that all parties in Israel's attack on Gaza knew where the UN's premises were based. "The Secretary-General was deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the death of a United Nations Office for Project Services staff member, when two UN guesthouses in Deir al Balah were hit in strikes," a spokesperson for secretary-general Antonio Guterres wrote. "The locations of all UN premises are known to the parties to the conflict, who...

Hamas has accused Israel of escalating its “war of extermination” in Gaza after an air strike on a UN facility in Deir al-Balah killed a foreign humanitarian worker and wounded five others. In a statement, Hamas called the attack a “heinous crime” and a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.” The group said it was part of Israel’s “systematic policy” to target civilians and aid workers, aiming to “terrorise” them and worsen the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Hamas said Israel has killed hundreds of Unrwa and relief workers inGaza since...

Turkey detained Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the main rival of President Tayyip Erdogan, on charges of corruption and aiding a terrorist group in what the main opposition party on Wednesday called "a coup against our next president".

The move against the popular two-term mayor caps a months-long legal crackdown on opposition figures across the country which has been criticised as a politicised attempt to hurt their electoral prospects and silence dissent.

Itamar Ben Gvir is back in government. The far-right ultranationalist politician has been reinstated as Israel’s minister of national security, the prime minister’s office has confirmed. Ben Gvir, who leads the far-right Jewish Power party, quit in January in protest at a ceasefire deal in Gaza. His return comes just a day after Israel unleashed a wave of surprise air strikes on the besieged enclave, killing more than 400 Palestinians. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to keep bombing Gaza until Hamas releases captives. “The government unanimously approved Prime...

Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil says he was "targeted" for advocating for the Palestinian cause in a new letter from the Louisiana detention center where he is being held after his arrest by federal immigration authorities earlier this month. "I wake to cold mornings and spend long days bearing witness to the quiet injustices underway against a great many people precluded from the protections of the law," Khalil said in the letter dictated over the phone to his family on Monday. The 30-year-old legal U.S. resident, who played a major...
