Two ballistic missiles were fired from Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen in the direction of a U.S. Navy warship as it responded to a distress call from a commercial tanker in the Gulf of Aden, the Pentagon said late Sunday. 

The USS Mason, along with allied ships, responded to a distress call from the commercial vessel, the Central Park, which reported “that they were under attack by an unknown entity,” according to a statement from U.S. Central Command. 

U.S. Department of Defense spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed Thursday that the crew of the USS Carney, a guided missile destroyer operating in the Northern Red Sea, shot down three land attack cruise missiles and several drones that were launched by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen.

The rave started at midnight on Friday. Hundreds of young Israelis came prepared to party well into Saturday evening.

A Russian attack on the village of Hroza, south-east of Kharkiv, has killed at least 51 people, including an eight-year-old boy, Ukraine says.

Villagers were attending a wake for a local resident when a missile struck at 15:15 local time (13:15 BST).

Ukraine's defence ministry said there were no military targets in the area - only civilians.

Kharkiv regional head Oleh Synyehubov described the attack as one of the region's "bloodiest crimes".

The weapon Beijing launched over the South China Sea traveled at speeds of more than 15,000 miles an hour as it circled the globe.

Flying at least 20 times the speed of sound, it could reach anywhere on earth in less than an hour. 

The summer 2021 test flight ended with the missile striking near a target in China, but it sent shock waves through Washington. National security officials concluded Beijing had launched a hypersonic weapon—a projectile capable of traveling at least five times the speed of sound.

Maryna Ivanova, a young woman living in a riverside village in southern Ukraine, had an uneasy feeling when her fiancé and brother left for work one morning in early May. They were headed to a nearby island in the Dnipro River, the watery front line between Russian and Ukrainian forces, and the area was getting heavily shelled.

Standing at her stove, making pork and potato soup, Ms. Ivanova heard — and felt — an enormous blast, much more frightening, she said, than the explosions that have become routine.

“It felt like something was dropped right on us,” she said.

The Ukrainian capital Kyiv has been targeted by further Russian air attacks, described by one official as "exceptional in density".

Ukraine said all 18 missiles were shot down and footage showed air defences destroying targets over the city.

But Russia said its attack - which used drones and missiles - had hit all its targets.

Moscow has stepped up its air campaign in recent weeks, ahead of an expected Ukrainian offensive.

Russia fired dozens of missiles at Kyiv and other regions across Ukraine overnight, striking civilian infrastructure and the country’s defense industry in one of the biggest barrages this year as its forces continued to claw more territory in the east.

Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhny, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, said Russia had launched 81 missiles of different varieties from air, land and sea, in addition to eight Iranian-made attack drones. Four of the drones and 34 cruise missiles were intercepted, Gen. Zaluzhny said.

The Ukrainians are set to begin training on the Patriot missile system in the United States as soon as next week, two US officials familiar with the matter tell CNN.

The training program will take place at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, where the US conducts its own training on operating and maintaining the advanced air defense system. Fort Sill is one of the Army’s four basic training locations and home to the service’s field artillery school, which has been training service members for more than a century.
