President Biden on Monday signed a proclamation to establish a national monument honoring Frances Perkins, the first woman to serve in a presidential Cabinet and the nation’s longest-serving labor secretary.

Mr. Biden made the announcement and signed the proclamation during a visit to the Labor Department. The monument will be built in Newcastle, Maine.

The House passed legislation on Tuesday that would remove artwork from the Capitol that honors people with legacies of defending slavery, including by serving the Confederacy.

The 285-120 vote was bipartisan, but it split Republicans. A minority of 67 Republicans joined with all Democrats in support, while 120 voted against it. 

The House passed a resolution Tuesday to expel Confederate statues from the US Capitol and replace its bust of Roger B. Taney, the chief justice who wrote the Dred Scott decision, with one honoring Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court justice.

The vote was 285 to 120. Sixty-seven Republicans voted with 218 Democrats in support of the bill.

The House voted to remove the bust of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney and several other statues associated with the Confederacy or racism.

Democrats have been determined to rid the building of statues memorializing long-dead dignitaries who held racist viewpoints, a goal realized in Tuesday's vote of 285-120. Sixty-seven Republicans voted with all Democrats present, but many GOP members said the removal process should be left to the states, which are each allowed to place two statues in the Capitol.

A record number of Confederate memorials fell last year amid a push to reject racism after the killing of George Floyd — but the biggest Confederate monument in the world still stands in Georgia, just a short drive from Atlanta. Carved into a mountain, Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and Jefferson Davis tower over visitors to a state park.

Then there are the Confederate flags by the walking trail. The street names. The “Venable Lake” referencing a family once active in the Ku Klux Klan.

President Joe Biden is reversing statue-related executive orders put in place by former President Donald Trump.

The White House issued a statement on Friday that revoked the previous administration's orders to create a "National Garden of American Heroes" and direct the federal government and state-level authorities to prioritize the prosecutions of those who vandalized monuments.

The White House's statement did not include a comment from the president as to his reasoning for the decision.

Virginia's highest court ruled Thursday that the city of Charlottesville can take down two statues of Confederate generals, including one of Robert E. Lee that became the focus of a deadly white nationalist rally in 2017.

The state Supreme Court overturned a Circuit Court decision in favor of a group of residents who sued to block the city from taking down the Lee statue and a nearby monument to fellow Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Charlottesville’s city council voted to remove both.

President Donald Trump announced Friday that he would donate his salary for this financial quarter to the National Park Service for the restoration of America’s national monuments.

The president announced the news on Twitter, together with an image of the $100,000 check.

“I promised YOU I would not take a dime of salary as your President. I donate the entire $400,000!” Trump wrote.“It is my honor to give $100,000 to the National Park Service to help repair and restore our GREAT National Monuments,” Trump wrote. “So important to our American History! Thank You!!”

GRANT PARK — An 18-year-old activist who had just spoken to a crowd protesting at the Christopher Columbus statue in Grant Park had several front teeth knocked out by a Chicago Police officer Friday evening, according to video and multiple elected officials.

An outraged Ald. Jeanette Taylor (20th) said Miracle Boyd, 18, of the group GoodKids MadCity was assaulted by a police officer during the tense Friday night protest where police pepper-sprayed protesters trying to tear down a towering, nearly 90-year-old statue of Columbus.
