Tyler Broghammer leaves his office nearly every day armed with a small blue cooler. Inside is a weapon against South Dakota’s syphilis epidemic: syringes of penicillin. The sexually transmitted infection case manager at Oyate Health Center in Rapid City also carries rapid STI tests and condoms on his near daily drive around town, meeting with people he’s learned may have the disease. Broghammer is one of two STI case managers at Oyate Health finding and treating people who have syphilis. The organization is one of several working to address the...

A year after news started breaking of indictments in Nebraska in connection with a multi-million dollar marijuana and money laundering conspiracy, the U.S. Attorney's Office is seeking the forfeiture of $7.4 million in cash and accounts, plus a laundry list of high-end property that includes an original Andy Warhol painting. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Bunjer on Friday filed a "complaint for forfeiture in rem" against the seized property itself, which allows personal property to be forfeited to the U.S. government without filing a case in federal court. However, 11 men...

Destructive storms roared through the Plains Monday, unloading at least one deadly tornado, giant hail and hurricane-force wind gusts. As some communities pick up the pieces, new ones must prepare for the threat of strong tornadoes in the Midwest. • One dead, multiple injuries: At least one person is dead and several others are injured after a tornado tore through Oklahoma’s Osage and Washington counties Monday night, Osage County Sheriff Eddie Virden said in an on-air interview with CNN affiliate KOKI. Extensive damage occurred to dozens of homes between Barnsdall...

At least 16 tornadoes were reported in six states overnight into Tuesday morning. The twisters were reported in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and South Dakota. The most destructive storm appeared to have been in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, north of Tulsa, where major damage was reported. In addition to tornadoes, 4-inch hail, about the size of a softball, was reported in Kansas. A tornado watch had been issued Tuesday morning for parts of Missouri -- including St. Louis -- and Illinois. That watch was to be in effect until 8 a.m....

A 29-year-old man died Friday in a one-vehicle rollover crash near the Wyoming border in western Nebraska. Jaimin Mesa of Scottsbluff was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Banner County Sheriff K. Zane Hopkins. The crash occurred on Nebraska 88 about 4 miles east of the Wyoming border between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., he said. Investigators determined Mesa lost control of a Ford sedan and it left the roadway before rolling over several times. Mesa, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. Hopkins...

People in four US states were left unable to make 911 calls on Wednesday night after widespread system issues.

Many services have been now restored after reports that lines went down for call centres across Nevada, Nebraska, South Dakota and Texas.

Federal officials have previously warned that the move to digital systems by emergency services has brought with it the risk of cyber-attacks.

But a cause of last night's problems has not yet been given.

The State Department is failing to recruit a Foreign Service that fully represents the American people, as required by the Foreign Service Act of 1980. One of State’s most glaring recruitment shortcomings is its inability to hire new Foreign Service officers (FSOs) who come from all geographic regions of America. This ongoing failure helps to perpetuate the mindset of the current Foreign Service and shape its policy attitudes. Fielding a U.S. diplomatic and consular corps that truly reflects the geographic diversity and values of the American people, and not just...

“As lieutenant governor, I had this joy, truly joy, of traveling throughout the state,” Foley said Monday afternoon at the weekly luncheon meeting of the Executive Club in downtown Lincoln. “Going to every kind of adventure you could think of, from the Burwell Rodeo to every town’s chicken dinner or beef dinner, whatever it was, if I got the invitation, I was there. And you really get the feel for what Nebraska is all about. We have such good people here.” After serving eight years as lieutenant governor under Pete...

The Gophers football program has routinely missed out on the top in-state recruit, but the opposite has happened twice now. Robbinsdale Cooper linebacker Emmanuel Karmo, the top-rated local prospect for the 2025 class, committed to Minnesota on Friday. Esko, Minn., safety Koi Perich first bucked the string of exits when he signed with Minnesota in last year’s class, turning down Ohio State to stay home. Karmo, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, said April 8 he has narrowed down his recruiting options to the U, Ohio State, Oregon,...
