New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency to address rising crime and the opioid crisis straining local law enforcement. Starting mid-May, 60 to 70 National Guard troops will assist Albuquerque police with non-law enforcement duties.

The governor says the deployment aims to support officers while they focus on community safety.

Federal authorities have launched an investigation into a damaging fire that broke out in the entryway of the New Mexico GOP headquarters over the weekend. 

The fire broke out early Sunday morning, and authorities have discovered unspecified “incendiary materials” at the scene, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokesperson said Monday.

The spokesperson did not elaborate on what the materials were, according to The Associated Press.

Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman was found dead alongside his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, and their dog in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Wednesday afternoon.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department revealed autopsies were completed on both Hackman and his wife in a press release shared with Fox News Digital Thursday afternoon. No external trauma was seen on either the actor or the musician. Authorities continue to investigate the couple's deaths as official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are still pending.
