OpenAI is launching a tool that can detect images created by its text-to-image generator DALL-E 3, the Microsoft-backed (MSFT.O), opens new tab startup said on Tuesday amid rising worries about the influence of AI-generated content in this year's global elections.

The company said the tool correctly identified images created by DALL-E 3 about 98% of the time in internal testing and can handle common modifications such as compression, cropping and saturation changes with minimal impact.

OpenAI said it has developed a tool that can clone human voices from just 15 seconds of recorded audio — but it hasn’t yet released it to the public over fears that it will be misused, especially during the 2024 election.

Called Voice Engine, the software was first developed in 2022 and integrated into ChatGPT’s text-to-speech feature.

But beginning in late 2023, OpenAI “started privately testing it with a small group of trusted partners,” the artificial intelligence giant said in a blog post earlier reported on by The Guardian.

OpenAI on Friday announced CEO Sam Altman would be returning to the company's board, along with three new outside board members. The moves come as OpenAI wraps an external investigation into the events that led to his brief ouster last year.

Why it matters: The company has been looking to move past its dramatic leadership crisis of last November.

Microsoft engineer Shane Jones filed a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Wednesday alleging that its AI design tool Copilot is “not safe.”

Jones told CNBC in an interview that he was able to use Copilot to generate images of teenagers playing with assault rifles. He also said the tool would produce unsolicited violent, sexualized images of women and ones that may violate copyright laws.

Elon Musk is suing ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman among others, claiming that the company he co-founded in 2015 has abandoned its mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity rather than profit.

The lawsuit sets up a legal battle between two of the most powerful tech leaders as legal scholars, philosophers, and political leaders debate the future of AI.

Elon Musk is suing OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, arguing it has breached the principles he agreed to when he helped found it in 2015.

The lawsuit - which has also been filed against OpenAI boss Sam Altman - says the firm has departed from its original non-profit, open source mission.

It says instead of trying to "benefit humanity" - as it was set up to do - it is focusing on "maximising profits" for major investor Microsoft.

OpenAI has been approached for comment.
