At least 16 people have died after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Ecuador Saturday, about 50 miles from Guayaquil. One of the deaths was reported in northern Peru. This comes as the region is still reeling from Cyclone Yaku, which killed at least eight people. Survivor: ā€œMy house was filled with water up to the waist. It reached us. We have lost everything. I lost everything. I don’t even have anywhere to sleep or to sit.ā€ An estimated 60 people have died since the rainy season...

Dozens of protesters attempted to take over an airport near Peru's border with Bolivia Friday as part of anti-government protests, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse them.

Protesters set fire to a police tank outside the Inca Manco Capac airport in Juliaca, in Peru's Puno region, according to images on social media and local television.

Protests against President Dina Boluarte resumed this week after a two-week pause, following violent clashes in December that left 22 dead after the removal and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo.

Newly installed Peruvian President Dina Boluarte declared a nationwide state of emergency amid mounting unrest following last week’s ouster and imprisonment of then-President Pedro Castillo, in what his supporters say was a legislative coup. Protests have spread since his arrest, with at least six people killed in the southern Andes region. Boluarte’s government sent troops to Peru’s second-largest city Arequipa Wednesday. Castillo supporters rallied in front of his jail in the capital Lima yesterday.

Mexico's government is in talks with Peru's former President Pedro Castillo to grant asylum to the impeached leader who now faces criminal charges, Mexican officials confirmed.

The big picture: Castillo met with Mexico's ambassador to Peru while in detention in Lima Thursday, per tweets from Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who shared a copy of Castillo's legal request for asylum in the country that stated he was "at grave risk" in the Peruvian capital.

Dina Boluarte became Peru’s first female president on Wednesday, capping off a dramatic day which saw her predecessor detained by police and impeached by lawmakers.

Boluarte, the country’s former Vice President, was sworn into the top job at Congress to become Peru’s sixth president in under five years.

The ceremony took place hours after a majority of 101 members in the 130-person legislative body voted to impeach former leader Pedro Castillo.

Peru's President Pedro Castillo said on Wednesday he will dissolve Congress and called for elections, as he battles impeachment proceedings.

Castillo announced a "government of exception," and added he will respect the current economic model during the dissolution of Congress.

This is the third attempt to impeach the embattled president since he started his five-year term in July 2021.
