Faced with a new round of accusations over plagiarism in her scholarly work, Harvard’s president Claudine Gay announced her resignation on Tuesday, becoming the second Ivy League leader to lose her job in recent weeks amid a firestorm intensified by their widely derided congressional testimony regarding antisemitism on campus.

In a letter to members of the Harvard community, Gay said she was stepping down as president but will return to the Harvard faculty despite widespread plagiarism allegations against her. 

A prominent professor has called for the immediate sacking of Harvard University president Claudine Gay to steer the school “back towards sanity” after she allegedly plagiarized other academics’ work 40 times.

Political science professor Dr. Carol Swain, formerly of Vanderbilt University, claims Gay used sections of a book she published in 1993 and an article published in 1997 without crediting her.

“Fire Claudine Gay posthaste,” Swain posted Thursday on X, as part of a post titled “some free unsolicited advice for Harvard University.”

The rest of American higher education looks to Harvard for guidance on academic norms. With that leadership role in mind, the university should clear away the uncertainty over how it has applied its plagiarism policies to president Claudine Gay’s past academic work and state clearly whether several of her papers ran afoul of the rules it expects students and professors to follow — or not.

Concerns that Harvard not only kept secret, but deployed high-powered attorneys to try to quash.

University of Pennsylvania’s board of trustees booted Liz Magill after her disastrous answer on antisemitism before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce sparked intense backlash.
