When Donald Trump on Monday chose Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate it excited populists — and unnerved some business elites. Later that evening, the president of the Teamsters, Sean O’Brien, gave a prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention. “Over the last 40 years, the Republican Party has rarely pursued strong relationships with organized labor,” O’Brien said. “There are some in the party who stand in active opposition to labor unions — this too must change,” he added, to huge applause.

In a surprise triumph over the populist National Rally, France’s left-wing political alliance came first in Sunday’s final round of parliamentary elections. The New Popular Front coalition of leftists won 182 seats, President Emmanuel Macron’s party won 168 seats, and the National Rally and its allies won 143 seats.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's new far-right party alliance in the European Parliament has fulfilled the requirements to form a political group called "Patriots for Europe."

To form the group, 23 MEPs from seven countries are needed.

On Saturday, the group secured the membership of the far-right Danish People's Party and the far-right Flemish Vlaams Belang, meeting the required threshold.

Steve Bannon, a top ally of former President Donald Trump, reported to prison in Danbury, Conn., on Monday to begin a four-month sentence for refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas — a term he sought to paint as a political prosecution.

Bannon spoke to reporters outside the prison before entering the prison grounds at noon.

Conservative podcaster Steve Bannon is due to begin his federal prison sentence on Monday, in what promises to be a turbulent few months for the former Trump advisor.

70-year-old Bannon will begin his sentence in Connecticut but could end up facing more jail time in New York.

Here are some key questions about his sentencing:

Why Is Bannon Going To Prison?

Bannon, a former Donald Trump White House chief strategist, was sentenced to four months in October 2022 after he was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress.

Voters across Europe spent the weekend sending a message to the EU’s political class: a nationalist and populist shift is happening across the continent.

The European Parliamentary election held over the past few days saw the biggest wins for nationalist and populist parties in European Union history.

As the results poured in across Europe, the media spun the news as an ominous “far right” victory throughout the EU.

News outlets made it seem as if fascism had once again reared its ugly head over Europe after eight decades of liberal peace and prosperity.

Depending on where you stand politically, you might view the Right-populist surge in the European Parliament as either a grave threat to democracy, or as a striking victory for it — and a major step forward in “taking back control” from the Brussels oligarchy. But both positions would be wrong. The truth is, despite yesterday’s hysteria, compounded by Macron’s decision to dissolve parliament and call an election, the impact of these elections won’t be as significant as people fear or hope.
