In the hours after President Biden’s inauguration this year, protesters marched once again through the streets of Portland, Ore., sending a message that putting a Democrat in the White House would not resolve their problems with a system of policing and corporate wealth that they saw as fundamentally unfair.

Demonstrations in Portland to commemorate May Day Saturday turned violent overnight, with officials declaring a riot and arresting six people, one with a knife.

Three separate Starbucks stores and a Hilton hotel in the Oregon city were marred by graffiti, and one man was charged with menacing cops with a knife, Portland police said on Twitter.

May 1, or May Day, is celebrated in many nations as International Workers Day or Labor Day.

Black Lives Matter and Antifa spoke out against Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s call to ‘unmask’ violent protesters. Hours after the mayor’s comments, another riot broke out in the city.

“We must stand together as a community against this ongoing criminal intimidation and violence,” Mayor Wheeler said on Friday. “Our job is to unmask them, arrest them, and prosecute them.”

“People know who these criminals are,” Wheeler continued.

“They want to burn, they want bash, they want to intimidate, they want to assault,” Mayor Ted Wheeler said Friday, while announcing the city would extend its state of emergency through Monday.

Police in Portland, Oregon, declared a riot in the northwest part of the city late Friday night after rioters began smashing windows, tagging graffiti on buildings and broke into a restaurant.

A resident who was filming the mayhem had a rock thrown through his window by a rioter, police said.

The unrest came after Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler extended the state of emergency in the city through the weekend over possible continued unrest, according to FOX 12 of Oregon.

Police in Portland, Oregon, declared a riot Friday night after authorities said protesters smashed windows and burglarized businesses during demonstrations that started earlier in the day after police fatally shot a man while responding to reports of a person with a gun.

The vandalism downtown came after the Friday morning police shooting but also was part of vigils and demonstrations already planned for the night in the name of people killed in other police shootings nationwide. They include 13-year-old Adam Toledo of Chicago and Daunte Wright, a Black man in Minneapolis.

Since President Joe Biden took office in January, the Department of Justice has been quietly dismissing federal cases against Portland, Oregon, rioters according to local media.

“Federal prosecutors have dismissed more than one-third of cases stemming from last summer’s violent protests in downtown Portland when protesters clashed with federal agents,” KGW reported Wednesday. The network “reviewed federal court records and found 31 of the 90 protest cases have been dismissed by the U.S. Department of Justice, including a mix of misdemeanor and felony charges.”

People might imagine that if they found themselves amid a left-wing political rally, they might have some idea how they got there.

That didn't seem to be the case for several left-wing activists, according to local reports about the protests in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday night that led to the arrests of eight people. Authorities say they found a number of weapons among those at the demonstration, including a backpack full of Molotov cocktails and two metal batons.

“Where the f--- are we going?” one man yelled as the crowd of protesters approached a highway entrance.

Charges against 90% of the protesters arrested during anti-police riots in September were dropped, according to Breitbart.

Those charges include attempted murder, arson and assault. Meanwhile, only 19 of the 213 arrested that month are pending.

Joseph Sipe is wanted for throwing Molotov cocktails at police officers. On September 23, he was arrested on charges of attempted murder, attempted assault, arson, possession of a destructive device and rioting. He was released after posting bond. Then, all of his charges were later dismissed.

When is a riot not a riot? When it happens in Seattle. Or anywhere in Washington, for that matter, where riots don’t exist, in the law at least.

In 2013, the state legislature removed the word “riot” from the law pretty much altogether, instead defining violent illegal gatherings as “criminal mischief.”
