Members of the Coast Guard in Alaska rescued 18 people on board a sightseeing boat that ran aground Thursday near the Columbia Glacier in Prince William Sound. A group of activists organized by FCPS Pride held a rally and march near Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church on Aug. 15 to support transgender, nonbinary and gender expansive youth in Fairfax County Public Schools. Teachers, students, administrators and activists were joined by elected officials in praising the statement issued earlier in the day by FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid, which assures constituents that the current Fairfax County policies for trans and nonbinary students will remain unchanged.

The school system, which says it celebrates diversity as a strength, said its policies already align with state and federal laws. Prince William County Public Schools won’t follow Virginia’s new model policies regarding transgender students, the school system said Thursday. Authorities said a teenager has been charged after he stole a vehicle from a 7-Eleven in Woodbridge and hit a police officer with it. The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. Thursday at the store in the 14700 block of Darbydale Avenue, according to police in Prince William County.
