To repay African Americans in California for the ā€œongoing and compounding harmsā€ of slavery, a state task force on June 1 recommended lawmakers create 10 new offices to oversee reparations.

The interim report (pdf) by the California Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans—about 500 pages long—describes the harms slavery inflicted on African Americans and its ā€œlingering effects on American society today.ā€

A Georgia jury convicted three white men of murder on Wednesday in the death of Ahmaud Arbery, 21 months after the 25-year-old Black man was chased down and shot to death while out for a Sunday jog.

Travis McMichael, who fatally shot Arbery in February 2020, was convicted on all nine charges, including malice murder, four counts of felony murder, aggravated assault with a shotgun, aggravated assault with a pickup truck, false imprisonment and criminal intent to commit a felony.

Three white Georgia men all face life in prison after being found guilty on Wednesday of chasing down and murdering Ahmaud Arbery , a 25-year-old black man.

Their lawyers argued self-defense, while prosecutors claimed Greg and Travis McMichael and their neighbor William "Roddie" Bryan chased down and killed Arbery near the port city of Brunswick because of his race.

A Georgia jury on Wednesday found three white men charged in the death of Ahmaud Arbery guilty of multiple counts of murder.

The jury found Travis McMichael, 35, who fatally shot Arbery on Feb. 23, 2020, in a Brunswick, Ga., neighborhood, guilty of all nine counts brought against him, including malice murder.

On May 25, 2020, footage of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis set the internet ablaze, igniting a fervor for justice among the attentive and then-quarantined online masses. In the now widely circulated video, George Floyd can be heard pleading, ā€œI can’t breatheā€ — the same three words Eric Garner had yelled not six years prior — 28 times before he became unconscious and later died. What followed was nothing short of a wildfire.

For much of the country, it has felt like racism itself was on trial in Minneapolis. What does the verdict say about where America goes from here?

There have been other moments of police violence against Black men captured on video over the past few years.

As part of a new moment in human history when nearly everyone is equipped with video-recording phones, witnesses – and sometimes even the mandated clip-on cameras of police officers themselves – have captured the violent deaths of men such as Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Rayshard Brooks.

More than half a year after George Floyd's death during a police encounter ignited nationwide protests and discussion around racial justice, Americans' belief that race relations is the top problem facing the country remains higher than it was before those events.
