Dozens of suspects in violent protests against an Atlanta-area police training facility critics call “Cop City” have been indicted on racketeering charges. 

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr released the indictment Tuesday, accusing the 61 defendants of acting as “militant anarchists” in the “Stop Cop City” movement. 

Mr. Carr alleged the suspects conspired to prevent the facility’s construction “by conducting, coordinating and organizing acts of violence, intimidation and property destruction.” 

More than 60 activists have been indicted on RICO charges over ongoing efforts to stop the construction of a public safety training center near Atlanta, according to a newly unsealed indictment.

In total, 61 people have been charged with violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Five of those named in the indictment are also facing domestic terrorism charges for allegedly attempting to commit arson.

Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to charges in his election interference case in Georgia on Thursday.

Trump chose to waive a formal arraignment appearance and instead pleaded not guilty in a court filing. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis charged Trump and 18 others for allegedly attempting to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.

A date for the Georgia trial has yet to be set, but Trump's lawyers have pushed to delay proceedings. Willis, however, has pushed to hold the trial as soon as this fall.

Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Thursday and sought to sever his case from other defendants who are accused along with him of illegally trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee had set arraignment hearings for Trump and the 18 others charged in the case for Sept. 6. A court filing waiving arraignment means Trump won’t have to show up for that.

Former President Donald Trump on Thursday pleaded not guilty to criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory in Georgia and waived his right to appear at his arraignment next week, according to a court filing.

Trump’s arraignment on 13 felony charges is scheduled on Sept. 6 at 9:30 a.m. ET in Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta.

Georgia prosecutor Fani Willis is aiming for a trial date in early March 2024 in her case against Donald Trump and 18 of his allies.

On Monday, Willis said Trump and the other defendants had been indicted on 41 counts in connection with efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. Each defendant is accused of violating the state's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute, which makes it a crime to participate in a "pattern of racketeering activity" or conspiring to do so. Trump is facing 13 counts in the indictment.

Former President Donald Trump was indicted for the fourth time on Monday night, and this time he can’t pin his hopes on escaping punishment with a presidential pardon.

Georgia’s Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis charged Trump with more than a dozen felonies tied to his efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the state, ranging from conspiring to commit forgery to filing false documents to racketeering. Willis brought charges against him and 18 co-defendants under Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, or RICO.

Rudy Giuliani, a RICO pioneer who is now facing charges in Georgia under the same laws he was celebrated for prosecuting, once called racketeering defendants illegitimate.

"Organized crime figures are illegitimate people who would go on being illegitimate people if I got them off," Giuliani said in a 1985 interview with The New York Times. "I would not want to spend a lot of time with them, shake hands with them, have sidebar conferences with them and become involved with people who are close to totally evil."

Former President Trump and a suite of 18 co-conspirators were indicted by a Georgia grand jury Monday on charges tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 election. 

The charges follow a more than two-year investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) into Trump’s efforts to pressure state officials to intervene to reverse his loss while also organizing a group of 16 Georgians to serve as fake electors and claim the former president had won the state.
