Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani admitted he could use the pension he never applied for.

Giuliani told the New York Post that he was "giving back to the city I love" when he declined to apply for a pension. From 1981 to 1983, he worked as the assistant United States Attorney General before becoming U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York until 1989 and serving as mayor from 1994 to 2001.

"Although I would like to take it now,” Giuliani said of his pension. “I don’t know how to go about it.”

A growing share of working Americans don’t think they will ever retire, recent surveys suggest. 

Retirement is a time-honored life stage and a near-universal expectation in working America. Yet, a comfortable retirement requires savings, and many workers fear they don’t have enough. 

In a July poll conducted jointly by Axios and Ipsos, 29 percent of workers under 55 answered a retirement query with, “I don’t think I will ever retire.” 

Amid recession fears, economic pessimism continues as Americans are growing more concerned they won’t be able to retire comfortably, according to a new survey.

Only 43% of nonretired adults think they’ll have enough money to live comfortably when they retire, according to Gallup. That’s the lowest level for that metric since 2012.

A record low of 19% of lower-income Americans expect to live comfortably, while a record high of 88% express worry about having enough money to retire, according to the survey.
