Republicans and Democrats were somewhat unsure what to do Tuesday with former special counsel Robert K. Hur, the man who declined to accuse President Biden of criminally retaining classified documents while also highlighting Biden’s memory problems.

A case in point: A Democratic congressman accused Hur of using his report to “trash and smear” Biden and to help Donald Trump, even as a Republican pilloried him as “part of the Praetorian Guard that guards the swamp out here in Washington, D.C., protecting the elites.”

Five weeks after his report into Joe Biden's handling of classified documents exploded a political bombshell, former special counsel Robert Hur appeared at a hearing in Congress to explain and defend his work.

Although Mr Hur declined to pursue a criminal case against Mr Biden or any of his associates, his report became a political lightning rod for how it depicted the president of the US.

Ex-Special Counsel Robert Hur testified on Tuesday that he "did not exonerate" President Biden in his report detailing the investigation into mishandling of classified records, repeatedly shutting down Democratic lawmakers’ characterizations.

Hur, who resigned as special counsel after releasing his report which found Biden willfully retained classified records but did not bring charges against him, testified publicly Tuesday.

Democrats seized on the fact that Hur did not bring charges against the president, claiming he exonerated the president completely.

Robert Hur, at the start of his special counsel probe into Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents, was lauded as an experienced and fair federal prosecutor who was well-versed in handling high-profile and complex investigations.

Then, after a year of near-total public silence, he released a damning report detailing the president’s alleged previous mishandling of classified material. Hur, a former US attorney appointed by then-President Donald Trump, was met with resounding backlash from Democrats, including from Biden himself.

US lawmakers will grill special counsel Robert Hur on Tuesday, weeks after his report into Joe Biden's handling of classified documents shook Washington.

The report found Mr Biden "wilfully" retained troves of files, but declined to charge him with a crime.

Mr Hur said a jury would view the president as a "well meaning, elderly man" with a "poor memory", in comments that enraged the White House.

Voter concerns over Mr Biden's age mean Republicans will focus on the remarks.

Special Counsel Robert Hur is expected to testify on Capitol Hill on his findings following months of investigating President Biden's mishandling of classified records.

Hur will testify publicly at the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Hur, who released his report to the public in February, did not recommend criminal charges against Biden for mishandling and retaining classified documents and stated that he wouldn't bring charges against Biden even if he were not in the Oval Office.

Believe it or not, Robert Hur was not always a political pariah among Democrats in Washington.

As recently as six weeks ago, he was just a Republican lawyer and former federal prosecutor handling one of the Justice Department’s least enviable assignments as the special counsel appointed to oversee the investigation into Joe Biden’s possession of classified documents.

Special counsel Jack Smith's prosecutors claimed that former President Trump's handling of classified documents is not "remotely" similar to how President Biden also handled sensitive national security information as laid out in dueling special counsel Rob Hur's report released earlier this month.

The 12-page filing Monday countering Trump's motion to dismiss the indictment "based on selective and vindictive prosecution" serves as Smith's first response to the blistering Hur report.

At their weekly news conference, several Republican House leaders wrongly claimed the special counsel report into Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents found the president was mentally unfit to stand trial. The report said no such thing.

Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report ultimately concluded “the evidence is not sufficient to convict” Biden and that “no criminal charges are warranted.”
