But with a swell of new attention and support for those Salt Lake City landmarks grabbing recent headlines, Preservation Utah issued its more detailed list of the state’s most endangered notable buildings and places. Whether in direct danger of demolition or menaced by neglect, future development, natural disasters or other factors, the 17 buildings or sites in five counties all need...

Demonstrators lock arms and surround an encampment in support of Palestine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on Monday, April 29, 2024. Editor’s note: This open letter to campus protesters was originally published on Facebook by the author. It is published with her permission and has been lightly edited for clarity and style. I’ve seen other people write to you, but I just walked among you at one of your campus encampments — George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Here are my thoughts: Instead of hanging out...

East Leopards defender Khristian Bombeck (8) is congratulated by teammates after he makes a goal during a game against the Brighton Bengals at East High School in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. SALT LAKE CITY – The East High boys soccer team put any feelings of pressure behind it Friday afternoon as it took on Brighton in a match to decide the Region 6 title. There were other obstacles, after all. As the teams took the field for the 3:30 p.m. start, a snowstorm blew in over...

(SALT LAKE CITY) — Transgender activists have flooded a Utah tip line created to alert state officials to possible violations of a new bathroom law with thousands of hoax reports in an effort to shield trans residents and their allies from any legitimate complaints that could lead to an investigation. The onslaught has led the state official tasked by the law with managing the tip line, Utah Auditor John Dougall, to bemoan getting stuck with the cumbersome task of filtering through fake complaints while also facing backlash for enforcing a...

SALT LAKE CITY — The future of Maurice Abravanel Hall has yet to be determined, but the Utah Symphony is included in "a potential sports, entertainment, culture and convention district," Salt Lake County leaders say as discussions over downtown's future outside of the Delta Center heats up. Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson issued a lengthy statement on Tuesday, confirming that her office has been involved in conversations with the Utah Symphony and Smith Entertainment Group over an entertainment district outside of the Delta Center. Smith Entertainment Group, owner of...

Complaints that screenings are ā€œnot very accurate.ā€ Concerns the devices provide a ā€œfalse sense of security.ā€ These were some of the responses the Salt Lake City School District received when it surveyed teachers, students and parents about the machines that were installed at West, East and Highland high schools in October. According to survey data a district official presented to board members in April, a little over a third of students at the high schools reported that they do not believe the weapons...
